Aspyr Confirms LOTR Classics Are Coming Back After Surprise War in the North Release

Aspyr is digging deeper into Middle-earth after unexpectedly bringing a long-lost Lord of the Rings game back to modern platforms. The LOTR_: War in the North_ – Legacy Edition launched on August 11 with little advance warning, reviving the 2011 action RPG after years away from digital stores.

More importantly, Aspyr has confirmed that this is only the beginning of its plans for the franchise. That could put several fan favourites back into the conversation around top upcoming video game releases.

Classic LOTR comeback

The original War in the North was developed by Snowblind Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, now known as Warner Bros. Games, in 2011 before eventually disappearing from digital storefronts. Aspyr has now brought the action RPG back with the Legacy Edition. Aspyr describes it as its first Lord of the Rings title and says more classic releases will follow, although exactly which games will return remains unknown.

Aspyr’s wording is also worth noting because it promises “classic releases” rather than specifically confirming that every project will be a full remaster. Still, the announcement adds an interesting new direction to current gaming trends, where older titles are regularly being adapted for newer hardware. Aspyr already has extensive experience bringing older games to modern platforms, making its move into Middle-earth a natural fit for the studio.

Middle-earth favourites

There is no shortage of possible candidates. The 2002 movie adaptation The Two Towers and its 2003 sequel The Return of the King are among the most obvious choices, with both remembered for translating Peter Jackson’s films into action-focused gaming experiences.

Return of the King could be particularly well suited to a revival. The original offered several playable characters, multiple story paths and two-player co-op. A modern version could improve its camera, controls, resolution and frame rate while potentially adding online co-op.

Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!

Other possibilities include turn-based RPG The Third Age, large-scale action game Conquest, The Hobbit and the two Battle for Middle-earth strategy games. None has been announced by Aspyr, however, and licensing could make some titles more complicated to revive.

Such a catalogue means Aspyr has plenty of options that could eventually join the top upcoming video game releases, but any specific candidate remains speculation until the company reveals its next project.

Legacy Edition upgrades

Aspyr’s first step is already available. War in the North – Legacy Edition has launched for PS5, XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC, although the European Switch versions arrive on August 18. The regular price is $19.99, with Steam offering a 10% launch discount through August 25.

The Legacy Edition goes beyond simply making the old game playable again. Improvements include 60fps support on platforms other than the original Switch, refined enemy target locking, autosaves, additional save slots and an updated UI. Two-player local split-screen is supported on compatible platforms, alongside three-player online co-op.

That makes War in the North one of the more unexpected latest game releases of August. With Aspyr now openly promising additional classics, future latest game releases could include another trip into gaming’s extensive Middle-earth back catalogue.
