Gran Turismo 7 Hints at Bigger Update as Free Cars and Millions of Credits Arrive

Gran Turismo 7 players have plenty to do this week, but one unusual event is attracting more attention than the rest. A shortened Online Time Trial has raised questions about what Polyphony Digital is preparing for its next update. With new challenges and World Series rewards also arriving, the racer has plenty happening for entertainment and racing fans this week.

Update raises questions

The latest Online Time Trial features the 1997 Toyota MR2 GT-S, with drivers tackling Autodrome Lago Maggiore’s East End layout using Sports Hard tyres. Unlike the usual two-week events, however, this challenge lasts only seven days and ends on August 20.

That change matters because Polyphony previously shortened Time Trials when Update 1.49 altered GT7’s physics in July 2024. Existing lap times would have become difficult to compare after the changes, so the developer adjusted the schedule around the update. The same pattern does not guarantee another physics overhaul, but it has created speculation that more game development changes could be coming.

Polyphony boss Kazunori Yamauchi has already revealed four cars heading to the game: the Toyota Chaser, Toyota Mark II Tourer V, Hyundai Ioniq 6 N and Caterham Seven Superlight R500. That gives gaming fans another update to watch during a busy period for the latest game releases.

Challenges go live

Five new Weekly Challenges also become available on August 14 and remain live until August 20. The standout Special Event features the 1,270hp Yangwang U9 in a five-lap race at Grand Valley – Highway 1. Players can also tackle the World Touring Car 600 at Tokyo Expressway, which offers 550,000 credits for winning its 12-lap race. Increased tyre wear and fuel consumption add a strategic element to the event.

Completing Weekly Challenges provides additional rewards. One completion earns a 100,000-credit ticket, three award another 200,000 credits and finishing all five provides a 6-Star Roulette Ticket containing a car.

These regular events have become part of GT7’s long-term support, reflecting broader gaming trends where major titles continue receiving activities years after launch. It also keeps GT7 relevant as entertainment options continue to compete for players’ attention.

Free cars available

The Gran Turismo World Series adds another reason to play this weekend. Round 2 takes place in Tokyo on August 15, with Polyphony running special in-game campaigns around the Manufacturers Cup and Nations Cup. Players who correctly predict each competition’s winner can receive one million credits, meaning two correct predictions pay two million in total.

Watching the broadcasts through GT7’s Viewers Campaign also unlocks two special cars. Players can earn a different Stealth Model from each broadcast. The Mazda 787B 91 Stealth Model is available to players who tune into the Nations Cup. Those watching the Manufacturers Cup can pick up the Toyota FT-1 Stealth Model. These blacked-out versions cannot normally be purchased in-game.

A World Series Red Bull X2019 Time Trial remains active at Deep Forest Raceway as well, offering double the standard bronze payout through August 20. With rewards, fresh events and an update approaching, Gran Turismo 7 has carved out a busy week despite competition from the latest game releases.
