Xbox Introduces Mythic Achievements, Rewarding Players for Games Completed Years Ago

Entertainment and gaming continue to evolve as platforms find new ways to recognise player dedication. Completing every challenge in a favourite title can take considerable effort, yet reaching that milestone has not always received special recognition. Among recent gaming industry innovations, achievement systems are becoming another way to celebrate long-term accomplishments. Microsoft is now introducing a highly requested Xbox feature that rewards complete playthroughs, including games finished years ago.

Key Takeaways

Xbox is launching ‘Mythic Achievements’ to reward players for unlocking all original achievements in a game, including those completed years ago, with improved tracking features rolling out first to Xbox Insiders.

  • Xbox’s new ‘Mythic Achievements’ system awards players for completing all original achievements in a game, with no requirement to complete DLC or post-launch content.
  • The system offers retroactive recognition, automatically granting Mythic status to games completed prior to the announcement, including older titles from the Xbox 360 generation.
  • Xbox is enhancing achievement tracking with progress bars for Mythic status, filtering for unfinished original achievements, and a new ‘Gaming’ tab to consolidate player progress and history.

Xbox gets Mythic Achievements

Microsoft officially unveiled Mythic Achievements on September 29, introducing a new completion reward similar to PlayStation’s Platinum Trophy. Initially available to Xbox Insiders, the feature recognises players who unlock every original achievement in a particular game.

Fortunately, additional achievements introduced through downloadable content (DLC) or subsequent updates are not required. Once awarded, Mythic status remains permanent, meaning future additions cannot invalidate an existing completion.

This distinction is particularly relevant to modern game development, where studios frequently expand titles with new challenges and post-launch content. Players can therefore pursue full completion without worrying about constantly changing requirements.

Older games also qualify

Perhaps the biggest surprise concerns retroactive support. Eligible titles completed before the announcement automatically receive Mythic recognition, including games dating back to the Xbox 360 generation.

Long-time players could consequently discover several rewards already waiting when they revisit their profiles. There is no requirement to replay previously completed titles or unlock their original achievements again.

Unlike certain gaming trends that primarily focus on upcoming releases, Microsoft’s approach also acknowledges years of existing player history. However, the company has not provided a comprehensive list of eligible games.

Easier achievement tracking

Alongside the new reward, Xbox is introducing several improvements to achievement tracking. Every supported game’s achievement page now features a progress bar showing how close players are to reaching Mythic status.

An additional filtering option highlights unfinished original achievements, while challenges introduced after launch receive an identifiable “add-on” label. Similar information appears throughout the Xbox Guide and individual achievement details. Meanwhile, a dedicated Gaming tab brings completed titles, achievement history, total Mythic counts and upcoming Gamerscore milestone badges together.

Each completed title receives a distinctive border, while Mythic badges feature new animations and match the player’s selected profile colour. Individual game hubs additionally display the date of completion. Friends can also visit one another’s Gaming tabs to compare their respective collections.

Insider access comes first

Currently, the feature remains exclusive to participants in the free Xbox Insider programme. Interested players can download the Xbox Insider Hub on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One or Windows PC and register for console previews.

Availability may vary between Insider preview rings as testing progresses. Microsoft is collecting feedback through Xbox Player Voice and its Insider community before expanding access, although a public rollout date remains unannounced.

The official presentation also features Gears of War: E-Day, demonstrating how Mythic recognition appears within the Xbox interface. Ultimately, the update reflects a broader shift in game development and platform services towards recognising player investment beyond conventional Gamerscore totals.
