Forget BINI vs. SB19: Here’s why you should stan both

BY JC Paredes 2 years AGO 4 MIN READ

PPop, the Philippine pop music scene, has blossomed into this incredible landscape. We’ve got groups like SB19 and BINI absolutely killing it, each with its unique flavor and bringing that Filipino charm to the world. But there’s been a bit of a trend lately that’s got me worried – fan wars.

Now, a little healthy competition can be a good thing, like pushing yourself to learn that extra dance move for a music video or writing an even catchier melody than the last. But when things get nasty, and fandoms start throwing shade at each other, that’s when things get messy.

SB19 Paved the Way, Folks

Let’s be real. Before SB19 hit the scene, many folks outside the Philippines might not have even known what PPop was, right? They weren’t the first, but there’s no denying that their fire tracks and electrifying performances turned heads and got the world listening to Filipino music. Even legends like Gary V himself commended the group for their incredible songwriting. From a personal experience, when I try to explain what PPop is to foreign friends of mine, all I have to say is SB19.

Blooms, Let’s Show Some Love, Not Shade

BINI’s recent music is fire, and there’s nothing wrong with being a proud Bloom. But here’s the thing: constantly comparing BINI to SB19 and trying to push this narrative that they’ve “surpassed” them? Not cool. Not only does it alienate the A’TIN (SB19’s fandom), but it also creates unnecessary tension.

SB19 themselves have said they’d be down to collaborate with BINI. Imagine the epicness of that. A collab between two of PPop’s brightest stars? But this negativity from some Blooms might just put a wall between the two groups, blocking that potential collab from happening.

BINI Shines Bright on Its Own

Here’s the truth, Blooms: BINI doesn’t need to put down another group to be successful. Their music is fantastic! We can all appreciate their talent and vibrant dance moves without dragging others down. Undermining SB19’s contribution to PPop doesn’t make BINI any better.

Honestly, it’s a major turn-off for fans who just want to enjoy the music. Every time I hit up Twitter or TikTok, all I see is this negativity towards SB19, and more often than not, it’s the comparison being made between the two groups.

The Power of a United PPop Fandom

Now picture this: a world where all PPop fandoms support each other. Award shows erupt in thunderous cheers that shake the venue, not petty fan wars dominating social media feeds. We showcase the true power of PPop – a movement celebrating Filipino talent, creativity, and, most importantly, unity. Isn’t that the whole point of the PPop movement?

So Blooms, A’TIN, and all PPop fans, let’s support all our idols and be the reason the world takes notice of the incredible music coming from the Philippines. Because let’s face it, the only competition PPop should be facing is the international music scene.

Positive PPop Fandom Culture

  • Instead of focusing on negativity, actively share what you love about your favorite groups. Share music videos, praise their performances, and highlight their positive qualities. This can be done without using another PPop group’s name. Because, let’s be honest, if not for clout, it’s pointless.
  • If engaging in discussions about different groups, maintain a respectful tone. Acknowledge the strengths of all artists and avoid making baseless comparisons. Remember, healthy debate is great, but toxic fan? It shows immaturity, and nobody enjoys it.

The Future of PPop

The future of PPop is bright, filled with the potential for global recognition and cultural influence. However, this future hinges on our ability to cultivate a spirit of unity and collaboration. By showing and giving respect to fandoms, appreciating the individual strengths of each group, and utilizing social media platforms for positive purposes, we can create a movement that celebrates the entirety of Filipino music.

Imagine a future in unified cheers for all PPop nominees, where social media celebrates the achievements of all Filipino artists and where collaboration paves the way for groundbreaking music projects. This future is within reach, but it requires a conscious effort from all stakeholders – artists, fans, and labels alike.
