The boy quickly complied, sticking out his own tongue as the Dalai Lama laughed and pulled him in for another hug, while the audience just laughed it off. After the incident, the spiritual leader spoke to the boy about creating peace and happiness.

On Monday, the Buddhist spiritual leader issued a statement apologizing for the shocking incident involving the young boy. In the statement, the Dalai Lama expressed regret for any hurt caused by his actions with the minor.

The statement explained that the Dalai Lama sometimes engages in “playful teasing” with people he meets. And this apparently applies to incidents in public and in front of cameras.
