Is the Game of Thrones' Jon Snow Spinoff Still Happening? | Series Gets Disappointing Update

Game of Thrones has given birth to several possible spinoffs, including a series centered on the protagonist, Jon Snow, tentatively titled Snow. Officially announced in June 2022, with Kit Harington reprising his most famous role yet in the lead, it was said to be in early development at HBO. But more than a year after it was announced, there’s no update about the prequel, posing the question, is it still happening? Sadly, the network boss finally broke his silence about it and gave a very disappointing update.

Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow Spinoff May Experience a Long Night

Over four years after the mother show, Game of Thrones, ended, HBO has planned to expand the franchise by making several spinoffs and prequels based on George R. R. Martin’s stories. Among the many projects pitched, House of the Dragon is the only show that has seen the light of the day. The others? They seem to be experiencing a long night, like Harington’s Snow.

In an interview with TVLine, HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys revealed that the spinoff has yet to be officially greenlit. None of the other planned projects have been given the go-ahead either, aside from a new show based on the author’s novella series, Tales of Dunk and Egg.

“We always have Game of Thrones scripts in development,” he said. “We greenlit Dunk and Egg in the spring.”

So far, HBO has only ordered the series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, based on the novella.

“I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything, but we are always working on different scripts and ideas,” he continued.

Hence, it just means that Snow may take some time before it finally makes its way to production—that’s if it’s still happening.

Bloys also revealed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight would start filming in Spring 2024 if the SAG-AFTRA strike was resolved.

What is Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow Spinoff about?

Jon Snow is among the most important characters in the eight-season Game of Thrones. From a nobody in the first season, he had a major character development as the show continued. He was often called the Stark bastard for being known as Eddard Stark’s son with another woman. But little did everyone know that he was his sister, Lyanna Stark’s child with Rhaegar Targaryen, making him the real heir to the Iron Throne.

If Snow were made, it would be the first Game of Thrones series that would take place after the events of the original show. Hence, it wouldn’t be a prequel and based on a book, given that no novel explored Jon Snow’s life after the main saga. Martin has even yet to finish the main novel series, with the sixth book, The Winds of Winter, yet to be released.

Though nothing is known about this project, it may continue Jon Snow’s adventure beyond the wall. This, too, may see the return of the other major characters who have survived the tragic finale, like Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark, Sophie Turner’s, and Isaac Hempstead-Wright as Bran Stark.

Martin confirmed that Harington would reprise his role in Snow, and the actor was heavily involved in the project. Aside from these, there are said to be three Game of Thrones prequel projects in the works at HBO: a story about Aegon I Targaryen’s reign, another one about Nymeria, and the last one will be about Velaryon.

With the success of House of the Dragon, which second season is set to be released in summer 2024, Snow may become a welcome addition to the growing franchise of Game of Thrones. It can’t be denied that Jon Snow is one of the most famous and favorite characters in the series, so many will surely be interested in seeing the continuation of his story.

But it’s undeniable that HBO seems to be milking the hit TV series so much that many spinoffs and prequels are coming out of it. Though only one show has come to light, House of Dragon, we hope fans won’t get tired of it.
