Mafia: Definitive Edition Won’t Have Mafia 3’s Neighborhood Policing System
Mafia: Definitive Edition is the next and final game in Hangar 13’s Mafia Trilogy Remastered. In recent news, the developer revealed that Mafia: Definitive Edition won’t include Mafia 3’s Neighborhood Policing system.
For the uninitiated, let me explain what Mafia 3’s Neighborhood Policing system exactly was. Mafia 3 was set in 1968 New Bordeaux, a fictional city based on New Orleans. During the period, racism was at its peak. To demonstrate what the world was like back then, Hangar 13 integrated a Neighborhood Policing system. This means, if you or an NPC commits a crime in black districts, police will respond poorly. Sometimes, completely ignoring these crimes. While, if you commit or witness these same crimes in white neighborhoods and posh areas, the police would react very quickly.
The developers of the game have decided not to include this system in Mafia: Definitive Edition because “it doesn’t fit with the story being told.”
Speaking to USGamer, Hangar 13 President and Chief Creative Officer Haden Blackman said, “One of the things that I was really proud about with Mafia 3 is the fact that we were able to take kind of gameplay and narrative and marry them in that way. With [Mafia: Definitive Edition] because of the nature of the story, the setting, and who the character is, that particular system didn’t seem as relevant. While that one system didn’t make the transition, because it just didn’t translate into the story or the time period, a number of others like the simulation mode of driving did.”
On the contrary, Hangar 13 is implementing many other features from Mafia 3 into Mafia: Definitive Edition. To read more about the features coming back, click here.
Mafia: Definitive Edition will be out for PC on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One on August 28.
