Magic the Gathering: What to Expect in the Upcoming Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Set
Magic the Gathering’s upcoming release will return to the world of Kamigawa, a set that first made waves in 2004. The trading card game will return to the world heavily inspired by Japanese culture, though its new iteration comes with a twist. Neon Dynasty is set 1200 years after the events of the original Kamigawa block. The plane now has a more futuristic and cyberpunk vibe.
The set will continue with Magic’s trend of showcase and alternate art cards. It features full-art basic lands inspired by Japanese woodblock print. Wizards of the Coast is dubbing these as the Ukiyo-e lands. Many of the cards in the set will also have anime-style showcase variants, some coming from renowned Japanese artists.

Neon Dynasty will also feature some staples of the Kamigawa block, like ninjas and samurai.
- These futuristic versions of themselves will come with technological augments. You may even see descendants of known names like Umezawa and Yamazaki.
- Vehicles come back in a big way in the set. Magic introduces mech artifacts for creatures to pilot. Fans pointed out how many of these seem to be inspired by the anime Evangelion.
- Story-wise, Magic seems to be amping up its progression, showing the second Praetor out of Phyrexia. Jin Gitaxias makes a big splash following Vorinclex’s appearance in Kaldheim. While their plans have yet to unfold, the planeswalker Tezzeret seems to have aligned with them.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty will release on February 18, 2022, with prerelease events the week before.
