Mass Effect 5: 2023 Development With Unreal Engine 5

Mass Effect is a 2007 action role-playing video game developed by BioWare and originally released for the Xbox 360. The game gained popularity among players as it released more sequences. Mass Effect 5 could possibly use Unreal Engine 5. But the project will not be swinging in full motion until 2023.

Publisher Electronic Arts and developer Bioware will be using Unreal Engine for the upcoming Mass Effect series. Recently, EA posted a job listing (via Venturebeat) by Bioware in need of a technical director for Mass Effect 5. The director should possess skills and experience in Unreal Engine 4+.

Bioware Staying Ahead of the Tech Curve

Unreal Engine has been used for building the first three Mass Effect games. After Bioware’s acquisition by EA, the studio switched to Frostbite engine. Additionally, the Frostbite engine has been used by DICE to structure FIFA, Madden, and Star Wars Battlefront titles. Even Bioware’s Mass Effect Andromeda, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Anthem were all built with Frostbite.

Jeffrey Grubb’s Prediction

Jeffrey Grubb is a Michigan-born reporter for VentureBeat’s GamesBeat website, which covers the video game industry. Grubb expresses in a series of tweets that, “EA and BioWare are considering all possibilities for Mass Effect 5,” and that the developer “wants to embrace next-gen visual tech.”

• One of EA’s most popular games, since it started shifting all its projects to Frostbite, is Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which Respawn built using Unreal.
• Grubb asserts that by 2023, when Unreal Engine makes it come back into the market, Frostbite would find it hard to sustain and meet the visual demands.
