PS5 Shortage: Sony Denies Producing More PS4s To Combat Problem

PS4 production and sales have always been a part of PlayStation’s long-term strategy and are not a solution to the current PS5 shortage.

Sony allegedly chose to boost the quantity of PS4 consoles made in response to player demand for the PS5. As reported by Bloomberg, last-generation consoles were to be produced at a faster rate to provide an option to individuals who have not yet been able to purchase a next-generation console.

Sony Dismisses Report

According to remarks made to the Japanese media NLab, they promised that they would keep producing PS4 and that it is not a result of the PS5 shortage. According to Bloomberg, Sony had intended to cease production of last-generation consoles at the end of 2021 in order to focus on PS5, but the lack of chips would have changed these action plans.

“It is not true that the PS4 production suspension was withdrawn due to the lack of PS5. There was no plan to end the production of PS4 at the end of last year (2021).
The PS4 is one of the best-selling console game consoles for SIE, and like the hardware of the past, it produces and sells both old and new hardware in parallel during the transition period of the generation.”

Microsoft has announced that it would cease production of the Xbox One system at the end of 2020. The company took the choice to suspend the manufacturing of Xbox One X and Xbox One S with the introduction of Xbox Series X | S, thus the consoles for sale from then on are the inventory sent to shops.
