According to a recent Bloomberg report, Sony plans to launch the PS VR successor during the holiday season next year.
The PSVR 2 (as people dubbed it) will be exclusive to the PS5 and will include a slew of innovative features. According to reports, this will include Samsung OLED display panels.
Bloomberg recently published an article about LCD panel producer Japan Display Inc, which claims that high resolutions at a sensible price will encourage VR headset designers to implement it widely. Conversely, the story also discloses that Sony has chosen Samsung Display OLED panels in place of LCD panels.
PSVR 2 Release Date
This isn’t ruled out as a probability. Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s SR. VP of platform planning, stated that the new PSVR design would not be launched this year. The following year is up for consideration.
“There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021.”

While Sony hasn’t verified the late 2022 release date, it makes perfect sense because it gives gamers enough room to get their hands on the (still scarce) PS5 while also allowing Sony to get the headset out in the wild before the holidays.
More details
- Currently, there are few specifics on PSVR 2, however, we do know that it will support higher resolutions, a broader coverage area, and enhanced tracking and feedback.
- PSVR 2 is expected to have a resolution of 4000 X 2040 pixels (2000 X 2040 per eye, marginally more than the Oculus Quest 2), a dial for lens modification, gaze tracking, and an engine within the headset on its own that could be used for haptic feedback, according to speculations.
