New PlayStation Patent: PS3, PS2, PS1 Compatibility Could Be Happening

A newly revised patent filed by Mark Cerny, the creator of the PS5 and PS4, has generated a buzz from eager enthusiasts. This is essentially a backward compatibility prototype, which allows PlayStation consoles to play games designed for outdated devices from earlier years.

On January 6, 2022, it was re-registered and now cruises on Twitter. Obviously, the coincidence leads fans to believe it might have to do with the long-rumored PS Plus makeover. This could feature a special tier that lets users play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games on PS5.

The patent, first seen by Twitter user shaunmcilroy, is labeled as “backward compatibility through the use of spoof clock and fine grain frequency control” on the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) webpage.

Is It Possible?

• There’s no indication that Sony has discovered a revolutionary solution to host PS1, PS2, or PS3 games on the PS5. Moreover, Sony registered a similar patent in 2019, which sparked controversy when it comes to backward compatibility.
• Using the PlayStation Now streaming feature, you may play certain PS2 and PS3 titles digitally. PS Now gift cards are currently being withdrawn from merchants; leading to speculation that Sony is planning to replace PS Now with a new network to effectively compete with Xbox Game Pass. We can only hope that Sony’s replacement pave the door for more backward compatibility in the future.

We don’t want to put a damper on the festivities right now. The previously stated new PS Plus is expected to debut in early 2022. So, the timing of this application is intriguing.

However, based just on the patent, it’s difficult to see how this might be construed as evidence of 100% compatibility. The most possible interpretation is that Sony has merely changed or modified this patent; it has done so around every two years since 2015.
