Right after hosting the biggest DotA 2 competition, The International 11, Singapore is once again bound to host another major event – The Olympic Esports Week 2023.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently announced the details of the first-ever Olympic Esports Week. Together with the Ministry of Culture, Community of Youth, Sport Singapore, and the Singapore National Olympic Committee (SNOC), IOC will conceive the first Olympic Esports Week. This event will showcase a series of competitions in various virtual sports, may it be hybrid physical or purely simulated sports. Furthermore, Thomas Bach, the president of the IOC said that the birth of the first Olympic Esports Week marks the full recognition of Esports as part of the Olympics.
“The first Olympic Esports Week marks an important milestone in our ambition to support the growth of virtual sports within the Olympic Movement. We believe the exciting new format of our virtual sports competition, with live finals to be staged for the first time, is an opportunity to collaborate further with esports players and to create new opportunities for players and fans alike. It is a perfect opportunity to be partnering with Singapore, which has a history of supporting innovation in the Olympic Movement, hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010, so we are looking forward to working together closely.” – IOC President Thomas Bach said during the announcement.

OTHER NEWS: The Sheer Economic Worth of the Esports Market
Esports is a rapidly growing industry and the virtual era is already on the rise
Since the inception of the idea of Esports, the rise and popularity of this industry has been going through the roof. Not only are we dwelling on video games that turned to the professional stage, but we are now also experiencing physical sports being simulated in virtual reality by non-athletes.
People who weren’t gifted the physical attributes to play baseball, bike race, sailing, and other sports can now compete professionally – even in the Olympics – because of Olympic Esports Week. While it may have some consequences to the real thing, Esports may be the solution for the next generation’s youth to be more attracted to sports.
