Returnal is the latest PlayStation exclusive making its way to the PC. Its upcoming release aligns with Sony’s desire to release ports of their games on the PC platform a year after their initial release. What’s surprising is that it may come with hefty system requirements that only the most premier setups can play at max settings. Here’s what you need to know about it:
System Requirements
The website Wccftech first reported that Returnal shows some of the system requirements for the game on its Steam page. Games are usually set up on Steam a few weeks before their launch to prepare them for a smooth platform release. Here are the minimum and recommended specifications:

Minimum
- Processor: Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
- Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTZ 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580
- Storage: 60 GB

Recommended
- Processor: Intel i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
- Graphics: Nvidia RTX 2070 or AMD RX 6700 XT
- Storage: 60 GB
- Ram: 32 GB
What’s interesting to note about these system requirements is the power you’ll need to run Returnal. At a minimum, you’re looking at specifications for maximum settings on games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (the latest).
To play Returnal on its maximum settings, you’ll need an advanced setup, the highest demand for any modern game. That means its requirements are higher than the max settings of Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077. It’s even higher than the notorious Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Will it Have Cross-play?
Aside from the single-player story experience, Returnal does have a multiplayer feature. It’s in the game’s endless mode called Tower of Sisyphus. However, the PC port will not feature cross-play with the PS5, likely due to difficulties implementing it across platforms.
The one handling the port is Climax Studios which has close ties to developer Housemarque. They can work on previous Housemarque projects such as Dead Nation and Resogun. The PC version of the game got an announcement during The Game Awards 2022. The intended release will be at least April 30, 2022, following Sony’s intentions.
Should I Buy Returnal?
Returnal is a hidden modern gem in the PlayStation 5, as noted by those who played it. The story was sublime, and the gameplay pushed your creativity to the limit. One of the strong points of Returnal was its use of themes to keep you coming back for more. It’s a rogue-like game, though it acts like a 3D sci-fi shooter with Souls-like elements.
One thing is that Returnal is not a game for everyone. Each strategic decision you make can help or hurt you with your run. It’s very punishing as it does not hold back the difficulty with players. Those who push through find that it can be a rewarding experience. Players note that those who reach the end find it a very exhilarating story. Returnal even managed to snag a couple of awards in 2021.
