Star Wars: What Will Happen in Jabba the Hutt Film?

Renowned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro had originally signed on to work on a Jabba the Hutt film that was ultimately canceled, and his recent revelations about the Star Wars film have piqued fans’ curiosity. While the project was never realized, del Toro shared some intriguing details, likening the concept to the classic movie Scarface.

Back in September, writer David S. Goyer teased the scrapped Star Wars film before Guillermo del Toro himself dropped some interesting details. He suggested that the letters ‘J’ and ‘BB’ were significant clues, which led fans to speculate that the movie would revolve around the notorious character Jabba the Hutt. Since then, the Hellboy director confirmed that the project would have focused on the early days of the infamous fictional crime lord.

Guillermo del Toro Likens Cancelled Movie to Scarface

Guillermo del Toro was recently interviewed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he opened up about the discontinued Star Wars project. Interestingly, the Pacific Rim director confirmed it would be an origin story like the famous Al Pacino film.

“I would love to do a Jabba the Hutt Scarface, his ascension in the crime family,” Del Toro said. “But it’s not a plan, I’m not announcing it. Don’t pick it up,” he joked.

This isn’t the first time that Guillermo del Toro has opened up about his canceled project, but the comparison to Scarface is an interesting one. In the 1983 Brian de Palma film, a poor Cuban refugee named Tony Montana makes his way to Miami and gradually works his way up to become a powerful drug lord. It suggests that Jabba the Hutt started in poverty and made ends meet before becoming one of the most famous crime lords in the Star Wars Universe.

For those unfamiliar, Jabba the Hutt is a powerful and menacing crime lord in the Star Wars universe, originating from the desert planet Tatooine. He often features enslaved alien women and had placed a bounty on the head of the legendary smuggler Han Solo, which led to Solo’s capture and subsequent encasement in carbonite. Additionally, Jabba managed to capture Princess Leia Organa, leading to a climactic showdown with Luke Skywalker, who sought to rescue his friends. If Lucasfilm and Disney decide to revisit Guillermo del Toro’s project, the film could reveal how Jabba managed to become one of the most feared icons in the galaxy.

Could This Origin Story Still Get Produced?

While the film del Toro was set to work on could have explored Jabba’s rise to power, the project was canceled. However, this does not signify the end of Star Wars projects, as the franchise continues to expand. Lucasfilm and Disney are currently focused on the MandoVerse, which started with The Mandalorian. While the TV shows are expected to continue, it’s unlikely that Jabba the Hutt will be revisited, considering that the MandoVerse timeline takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi, where the crime lord was famously killed by Leia.

Although the Jabba the Hutt film is no longer moving forward, fans can still look forward to more Star Wars shows in the future. The next major show set in the MandoVerse is the upcoming Star Wars series Skeleton Crew, which takes place in the same timeline. Moreover, the new show is believed to be connected to Ahsoka and will prepare fans for more of Ahsoka Tano’s intriguing story.

Skeleton Crew has not yet been given an official release date. However, it is currently expected to premiere on Disney+ in January 2024.
