Taylor Swift’s “Shake it off” Copyright Lawsuit latest update + Lyrics Comparison

5 years ago, the songwriters of the song Playas Gon’ Play which are Sean Hall and Nathan Butler filed a copyright lawsuit. The song was for a girl group who is 3LW. They accused the Grammy-award-winning artist Taylor Swift of copying their lyrics for her 2014 hit song Shake it Off.

Later in 2018, the lawsuit was rejected. However, an L.A. judge decided to continue with the lawsuit in 2020. According to Judge Michael Fitzgerald, the lyrics of the two songs are quite similar that’s why it went on again. The similarities of the songs are in the chorus parts.

And now, there’s a new update about this copyright lawsuit case. Courtesy of Billboard, Swift has filed a sworn declaration expressing her side about the claims against her. She filed it last August 8, Monday.

  • According to Billboard, the 32-year-old artist claims that the song is entirely written by her. Swift is also widely known as a singer-songwriter who writes her songs.
  • Then, in addition, she has never heard of the song as she was only 11 when Playas Gon’ Play was released.
  • She also claims that she has heard the accused lyrics a lot of times since she was a kid. That is common like other phrases such as ‘Don’t hate the play, hate the game’ etc.
  • Swift’s lawyers also stated that no one can monopolize the used popular term in the world of pop culture.
