The Hearth and Home update have finally made it to Valheim, bringing new features to the Viking survival game. The developers have suggested that players can start a new world to experience all the new features, but it is ultimately up to the player to deice, and there is plenty to discover either way.
Among the several new building and crafting features, a new item called darkwood has been introduced. This is a wood variant and can be used for crafting things and building materials. However, to craft darkwood building material, another new component called tat is needed. The tar can only be found in tar pits that are exclusive to the Plants biome. It can be used as it is found and does not have to be refined. The tar can be used to craft darkwood chairs, darkwood beams and poles (2 and 4 meters), darkwood gate, darkwood arch, raven and wolf adornments, hot tub, and more items.
Tar Pits
The location of the tar pits is randomly generated, much like any other area of interest in Valheim. However, it is very easy to spot them when they spawn, being big pits full of tar, standing out from the dry color palate of the Plant biome’s environment. These pits are guarded by Growths, a new enemy species, that tends to gather around tar pits.
Growths
The tar can be obtained in two ways, by harvesting it from the tar pits, or by defeating the Growths. The Growths are capable of inflicting a slow debuff on the player, making it difficult to get away from them. The best method to defeat them is to use arrows, preferably fire arrows. When Growth is defeated, it drops tar that can be collected.
Nodes
There is another way to harvest tar quickly. When collecting tar from the pits, players will have to harvest it from nodes around the tar pits. Players can use their pickaxes to dig a pit nearby, and then connect it to the tar pit by digging a channel. This new pool of tar will have more tar nodes from where tar can be harvested. A single pit of tar can easily provide 100 tar or more, and digging a new pit will make it easier to collect it.
