Why does Din need to go to Mandalore? Mandalorian Season 3 premise explained

Mandalore season 3 Mandalorian premise Din Djarin

Following the episode 1 premier of Mandalorian season 3 fans are wondering why Din Djarin needs to visit Mandalore as the central premise of the series.

Season 3 of Mandalorian expands the Star Wars series further, picking up right after The Book of Boba Fett. Season 2 of Mandalorian ends with Din Djarin bidding farewell to his little friend Grogu as he leaves for Jedi training with Luke Skywalker.

Between the seasons, the story continues in the spin-off series, The Book of Boba Fett. Fans get to see Grogu training with the Jedi Master as well as the foundation of Luke Skywalker school. Din’s visit leaves Grogu with a bit on canadrome as Luke offers him to two choices, either to rertun with Din and be a Mandalorian foundling, or accept Master Yoda’s former lightsaber and walk the path of the Jedi.

He eventually chose to go with Din Djarin leading to the events of Manadalorian Season 3, where Din reveals his mission of going to Mandalore. In that spin-off series lies the reasons why Din Djarin is going back to the ruins of Mandalore. Which is an essential part of the plot in the Mandalorian’s season 3.

Din Djarin and the Mandalore

In the spin-off series, The Book of Boba Fett, Din reconciles with the armorer following the events of Mandalorian Season 2, who leads his guild of Mandalorian. He also introduces Grogu to them with the confession of having removed his helmet in front of him. Not even once but twice. This behavior gives him the title of apostate and banishment from the clan, calling him, “A Mandalorian no more”.

The only way for him to get readmitted into the Mandalorian tribe is to bathe in the sacred waters of the Mines of Mandalore. For regaining his purity Djarin will need to visit his planet Mandalore however the only problem is the plant is unhabitable after years of war.

The challenge of revisiting Mandalore in season 3

The Mandalorian season 3 begins with a shot of a kid taking his oath of never removing his helmet and becoming a Mandalorian foundling. Many would mistake this sequence as a flashback of Din Djarin. However, soon enough the Bounty hunter himself zooms into the screen to save the boy from the attack of a crocodile creature.

Following this sequence, fans know the main mission of Din Djarin and Grogu is to revisit Mandalore. The whole premier leads into a task chain where the protagonist must finish each to eventually be prepared to visit the Mandalore.

The first task for this mission to Mandalore is to rebuild IG-11. The assassin droid turned into a nurse droid who sacrificed himself in season 1. IG-11’s lifeless body is a statue at Nevarro so they first need to visit there.

Bo-Katan Kryze of Mandalore

Another challenge on the way to Mandalore is Bo-Katan Kryze. She is a fallen political leader who failed to retrieve the Darksaber, a symbol of authority.

Din Diarin has the Darksaber and the authority regardless if he wants it or not, which raises a conflict between the two.

Moreover, Kryze believes the orthodox beliefs of Mandalorian are to blame for its current state. This creates a clash with Din Djarin’s methodical and conservative beliefs.

It will be interesting to see how Djarin finds a way to Mandalore despite this clash of beliefs.

As such the premise of Mandalorian season, 3 will revolve around Din Djarin and Grogu trying to visit Mandalore. This is the first time the home planet is in such a central focus.

Which builds up expectations of getting to know more about the planet and its citizens’ current state. There also isn’t much knowledge about the ritual necessary to reclaim purity once finding the water.

Whole and sole we will be getting to know a lot more about Mandalore. Perhaps, the season will also help define what being a Mandalorian mean.
