‘Your Name’ director’s next film Suzume No Tojimari hits Canadian Theatres; here’s how to get tickets

Makoto Shinkai’s film Suzume’s Locking Door (Suzume no Tojimari’s) Canadian premiere will be held at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on April 13 at 6:30 p.m. The screening is part of the TIFF Next Wave Film Festival, which runs from April 14-16. The film will subsequently be shown in Canadian theaters on April 14.

  • The film has now become the 14th highest-earning film in Japanese cinema history and the eighth highest-earning anime film of all time in Japan.
  • During its opening weekend, Suzume no Tojimari sold 1.33 million tickets and earned 1.88 billion yen (approximately US$13.49 million), debuting at #1.

Now for those who aren’t able to read it correctly, these figures represent a 38.7% increase in tickets sold and a 47.4% increase in earnings compared to Shinkai’s acclaimed film Your Name. That’s huge, quite literal huge. 

  • But the glory of Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name still lies in the outburst that happened quite after the theatrical release of Your Name, rather than the Box Office revenues.

  1. On May 19, 2022, Crunchyroll, a prominent anime streaming service, revealed their partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Eurozoom, and Wild Bunch International for the distribution of the movie.

  • Well before the Canadian release, starting from April 12, 2023, Suzume no Tojimari will be released in theaters in France and Malta. The following day, April 13, the film will be released in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, and New Zealand.
  • On April 14, the film will be released in theaters in the United States, United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Gibraltar, Ireland, and Luxembourg, other than Cananda.
    • Other than this PVR is bringing Suzume no Tojimari in India in the beginning of April.

Now because the film is having a Film Fest release earlier than commercial release, one can head here to buy the tickets. Remember that TIFF members will have an early opportunity to buy the tickets than the general public.

As of Sunday, the film has grossed a total of 14,310,602,380 yen (approximately US $109 million), surpassing the lifetime box office earnings of Makoto Shinkai’s previous film Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko), which earned 14.23 billion yen (about US$108 million in current conversion).

Suzume no Tojimari sold 14.8% more tickets and earned 14.4% more than Shinkai’s previous film Weathering With You, making it the strongest opening for any of Shinkai’s films.
