After a couple of decades, legendary South Korean movie star Choi Min-Sik returns to television as the leading star of Big Bet.

- Choi Min-Sik is a global phenomenon, known outside South Korea for his iconic performances in films like Park Chan Wook’s Oldboy and the 2010 serial killer drama, I Saw The Devil.
- Big Bet’s cast also includes Sohn Seok-Gu (D.P.), Heo Sung-Tae (Squid Game), and Lee Dong-Hwi (Extreme Job). Heo Sung-Tae in particular has been a fan favorite ever since his negative role in Squid Game.

- Other cast members are Ryoo Hyoun-Kyoung, Jo Jae-Yoon, Ryu Hyun-Kyung, and Kim Hong-Pa.
Where to watch Big Bet
Big Bet streams on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ elsewhere. The first three episodes of the Korean crime drama premiered on 21st December and the remaining episodes are expected to be released on a weekly basis.
What is Big Bet about
Big Bet follows the life story of Cha Moo-Sik, a gambler who keeps hitting rock bottom only to get back up, stronger than ever.
- The show intercuts between the present when Moo-Sik is a billionaire casino mogul in the Philippines and his childhood days in a rural orphanage.
- Moo-Sik’s rags-to-riches story is a rollercoaster ride, as he keeps betting on himself in the worst circumstances, lands in trouble and then reaches new heights of success.
The Martin Scorsese influence
The show is originally titled Casino in South Korea, but the name was understandably changed to avoid direct resemblances with Martin Scorsese’s legendary 1993 film of the same name. The narratives are also similar.

- The most striking aspects of Big Bet are heavily inspired by Goodfellas a fair bit, with its fourth wall-breaking monologues, post-arrest voiceover narration and long single-take shots.
- Big Bet is also inspired by Scorsese’s The Irishman, with its flashbacks and de-aging techniques to make the same actor play different ages through the years.
So far, Big Bet has been received by fairly decent reviews from critics, audiences and fans around the world. With Choi Min-Sik’s stunning performance and writer-director Kang Yoon-Sung’s stylish take, the show will definitely gain traction over time. Will you be watching Big Bet?
