Baldur’s Gate 3: Should You Save or Kill Nightsong?

Baldur's Gate 3 Nightsong

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an RPG that keeps players engaged for years. With numerous choices, not all can be experienced in one playthrough. A major decision in Chapter One involves Nightsong, initially mistaken for a weapon but revealed as a trapped person of a century. If you’re following Shadowheart’s story, you’ll need to choose between killing or saving Nightsong. Our guide will assist your decision-making!

What to do with Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3

The decision you make regarding Nightsong is really important within Baldur’s Gate 3. To reach this point, you’ll need to overcome the challenges of the Gauntlet of Shar and solve the Riddle of the Night.

  • Your choice significantly impacts both the world’s condition and your journey into Act 3.
  • It creates a central conflict for Shadowheart, a key member of your party.
  • It’s worth noting that obtaining the Spear of Night from the Silent Library is advisable. This weapon plays a crucial role in the upcoming encounter.
  • It’s highly recommended to have Shadowheart as part of your party.

Your decision will have enduring consequences throughout your playthrough, regardless of your choice. Therefore, we’ll assist you in evaluating the choices, allowing you to determine whether to spare or eliminate the Nightsong.

Keep in mind that this marks a significant point of no return in Baldur’s Gate 3. Once you engage with the water pool in the depths, you’ll be transported to a different realm, and any remaining quests in those areas will be gone. Therefore, it’s recommended that you complete the side quests beforehand to ensure you don’t miss important artifacts.

Do you save or kill Balthazar?

Your team will be transported to a realm that’s both mesmerizing and terrifying. At the depths of this region, you’ll encounter Balthazar, the necromancer from the Gauntlet of Shar. Balthazar seeks to acquire the Nightsong, a woman confined within this realm for more than a century. You’re presented with two choices:

  • Allowing Balthazar to take the Nightsong might seem convenient to avoid conflict, but it’s generally not recommended. Keep in mind, though, that picking this option will lead to Shadowheart leaving your group for good.
  • If you intend to eliminate Balthazar, it’s wise to do so before entering Shar’s domain. While the encounter in the Gauntlet of Shar can still be a challenge, the battle within Shar’s domain is notably more difficult.

Save or kill Nightsong?

After the battle concludes, you’ll face a critical choice involving the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3, either to end her life or spare her. Let’s delve into the aftermath of each decision:

Consequences of killing Nightsong

Shadowheart will stab Nightsong using the Spear of Night, killing her instantly. This act will infuse Shadowheart with the blessing of Shar, symbolizing her allegiance to the deity. Here are the results that follow from this decision:

Rewards:
  • Shar’s Spear of Evening (legendary)
Deaths:
  • Isobel – Despite her abilities as a Selunite Cleric, they won’t prove sufficient, leading to the ransacking of Last Light by cursed forces.
  • Jaheira – This character from previous games, who has the potential to become a companion, will meet an offscreen death.
  • Dammon – The blacksmith will also die, which will prevent you from providing additional Infernal Iron for Karlach’s romance and quest.
  • Art Cullagh – The sleeping man will also be slain, possibly blocking your access to recruiting Halsin and engaging in the Bear Form romance.
Shadowheart Romance:
  • You’ll find yourself unable to pursue a romance with Shadowheart. Being chosen by Shar, she will express that her devotion to her deity leaves no space for love beyond her loyalty to her lady. Consequently, you won’t have another opportunity to kindle a romantic connection with her.

Consequences of saving Nightsong

In this particular narrative path involving the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’re required to overcome a challenging DC 21 Charisma check. If you manage to succeed, Shadowheart will throw away the Spear of Night. The Nightsong will unveil her true identity as an Aasimar, one of Selune’s daughters.

Rewards:
  • Moonlight Glaive (rare)
  • Selune’s Spear of Night (legendary)
Deaths:
  • Ketheric Thorm – The battles against Ketheric Thorm became considerably easier thanks to the presence of an angel fiercely engaging him.
Shadowheart Romance:
  • This path ensures that Shadowheart’s romantic possibilities remain available. In fact, if your bond is already strong enough, she might openly express her affection for you right after this event, enabling you to embark on a romantic relationship.

So, should you kill or save Nightsong?

Deciding what to do in this situation depends a lot on how you want to play your character and what’s best for them. But if you’re just looking at the good and bad sides of each choice, choosing to save the Nightsong is recommended.

Choosing to end her life doesn’t offer big benefits right away and cuts off ties with important characters, which means you can’t finish some quests. On the other hand, saving the Nightsong makes bad characters die, so you probably won’t feel very sad about them later.
