Director Bong Joon-Ho put South Korea on the map of world cinema. His most recent film Parasite needs no introduction. Since its release and imminent global success in 2019, fans have been looking forward to what he will do next.
After all, how can you top the first Asian film to win the Oscar for Best Picture? Well, he’s back with his latest film, Mickey 17.
Mickey 17 teaser
As the title suggests, Mickey 17 is going to be a science fiction film. The film was announced earlier last year with Robert Pattinson taking up the mantle of the lead actor.

- The teaser has a typical Bong Joon-Ho’s signature classical music-inspired background score.
- We see Robert Pattinson emerge from a futuristic body chamber and he *absolutely* sells it.
- Bong Joon-Ho’s Mickey 17 is based on a science fiction novel of a similar name Mickey7, written by Edward Ashton. The book seems to be in The Martian and Dark Matter zone.
Mickey 17 plot details
Essentially, when one Mickey dies, he is replaced with another Mickey, but his memories are transferred to the new clone, making him immortal in a sense.
- The main character of Mickey 17 is played by Pattinson and is an “expendable” worker on the ice world of Niflheim. He is regularly given the most hazardous jobs for a human expedition, frequently ending in his death and regeneration through a clone with most of his memories intact.
- When Mickey7 returns to his colony after going AWOL on a normal scouting expedition to find a fresh clone already doing his Expendable tasks, he must strive to keep the dual existences hidden to avoid their demise.
- Mickey7 will have to stand up and figure out a method to preserve both mankind, and the indigenous life forms as the native alien species start closing in on the colony striving to terraform the planet for humanity.

Robert Pattinson returns to the big screen after taking the world of cinema by storm with his most recent outings in The Batman and Tenet.
- Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun (Minari, Nope), and Toni Collette (Hereditary, Knives Out) form the rest of the cast.
Bong Joon-Ho’s previous films
It’s criminal even to think that Bong Joon-Ho is a one-hit wonder with Parasite. His artistic masterpieces, Memories of Murder and Mother, make him a modern film director.
- Science fiction, in particular, is Bong Joon-Ho’s home territory. Before working on Mickey 17, Bong directed sci-fi dramas and thrillers such as Okja, Snowpiercer, and The Host.
Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, is already on board for Mickey 17. As revealed in the teaser, the film will release on 29th March 2024. It will be a long wait, but fans think it will surely be worth it!
