Valve, the gaming giant which brought you Steam, announced the launch of Steam Deck at the beginning of the month. Steam Deck is a handheld gaming device capable of running almost every AAA title on Steam. Its pre-orders began on 16th July and now we have some interesting news about the games it can support.
DotA 2 Test
It was confirmed by Gabe Newell, the president of Valve Corporation, that Steam Deck will be able to smoothly run Dota 2. Apparently, a Redditor emailed Gabe Newell asking about Steam Deck’s capabilities in running Dota 2, and Newell responded positively. When the president of a corporation acknowledges a fact, how can you not believe it?
Also, in an interview by IGN, Newell clearly stated,
“Well, I do immediately play Dota with each new version that I get so I’ve probably been a little more laser-focused on the usability testing”.
From this, it is pretty clear that Dota 2 can run of Steam Deck as Newell himself is a gaming enthusiast. We can trust the word of this man but is it actually worth playing Dota 2 on Steam?
How Good Is It?
Playing Dota 2 on a Steam Deck might not be a practical choice due to its small screen. Even with a mouse and keyboard attached to the Steam Deck, the 7” screen does not provide an adequate view. Players might not be able to make out what’s going on in the game, especially, when a chaotic team fight might begin.
Anyways it could provide a very different kind of experience for the players. Steam Deck can become a really handy tool to coaches in a professional Dota 2 team environment. Using it, they can instantly watch replays in the Steam Deck after a match and analyze it. It would be interesting to see if the pro players incorporate Steam Deck’s use in their games. Till then, we know for sure that Dota 2 will in fact run on Valve’s Steam Deck.
