Fold AR is a new augmented reality game by Niantic, the creator of Pokémon Go, and Fold, a financial firm. The game, dubbed “part of the metaverse” in a press release, is based on Pokémon Go but focused on cryptocurrency.
Fold AR
- The new game is based on the metaphor of “mining” Bitcoin, according to Fold CEO Will Reeves. The basic gameplay comprises finding binary code cubes and tapping them like Minecraft blocks until a reward appears.
- Unlike Pokémon Go and other Niantic games, Fold AR does not currently take place in a world filled with virtual areas that correspond to real-world locations. Instead, every 10 minutes, the game creates a block between one and fifty feet away from the player. This will then be approximating the rate at which real Bitcoin mining occurs.
With Fold AR, how will you earn Bitcoins?
- One of the prizes in the game is a Satoshi, a very small unit of Bitcoin. Fold power-ups are also included, which gamifies card purchases through an app. You must spin a wheel to win Bitcoin rewards, according to The Verge.
- Fold AR plans to release new features in the first quarter of next year. This includes a geocaching-style multiplayer system that will allow you to hide Bitcoin for others to uncover later, as well as non-fungible tokens (NFT).
Over the last five years, the NFT-based play-to-earn game Axie Infinity has generated a complex economy, but it seems unlikely here.
Niantic, according to Reeves, might take inspiration from Fold AR’s features, including the play-to-earn mechanism. He did say that there was no formal plan for adding financial elements to any Niantic game currently in development. He also refused to say which aspects of the game Niantic worked on.
This could provide a comfortable existence. However, how engaging the game is will determine whether or not it is successful.
