Elden Ring: Guard Counter, All You Need To Know

BY Katherine Felix 4 years AGO 3 MIN READ

Every FromSoftware game features a rich combat system with various tricks. One of these is the Guard Counter in Elden Ring. In this guide, we will show you how to use this technique in Elden Ring to help you on your journey throughout the Lands Between.

What is Guard Counter?

This is a technique in Elden Ring which is similar to the deflection technique in Sekiro. Moreover, learning how to use the Guard Counter can help players as they fight against strong enemies in Elden Ring.

Guard Counters are also similar to parries in other fighting games you may have played before this. If you successfully use a guard counter, you can break your enemy’s stance and give yourself an opening to attack them.

This technique is first taught to players at the start of the game. If you went into the Cave of Knowledge, you can play through a tutorial and one of the techniques the game teaches you is the Guard Counter. However, you also have the freedom to not walk into the Cave of Knowledge if you’re eager to start your journey across the Lands Between.

How do I use this technique in Elden Ring?

To perform this combat technique, you need to be attentive to your enemy’s movements. Once they strike, you must block their attack immediately to perform this technique. However, you can only perform a guard counter if you wield a shield. Also, performing guard counters require enough stamina. If you attempt a guard counter and your stamina decreases, you will get damaged instead of blocking the attack.

Here are steps on how to perform this combat technique in Elden Ring.

  • First, equip a shield in your off-hand. Then, block a melee attack using your shield.
  • After blocking the attack, perform a heavy attack. Guard counters don’t work if you opt to use a light attack on your enemy.

Guard counters are successful if you hear a twinkling sound effect and if you see a faint light appear around your character’s head. Moreover, attacks from guard counters can deal more damage than a regular heavy attack. So you may want to master this technique early on since it can help you out a lot.

However, you need to perform more than one of these techniques for Elden Ring bosses before you successfully break their stance. Check out our complete guide on Elden Ring bosses here.

Kath is just a small-time gamer with dreams of getting a simulator game that's like Sims 4, Stardew Valley, and Animal Crossing all rolled into one. In their spare time, Kath hosts streams with friends while playing online multiplayer games like Valorant and Call of Duty. There isn't any type of game Kath shies away from... except if it's a horror game. Make Kath choose between eating a ghost pepper or playing Outlast and they'll endure the pain that comes with eating a ghost pepper. At the moment, Kath is getting lost in the world of Teyvat with Raiden Shogun, Zhongli, and Venti on their current team. Instead of going for the meta, Kath's main goal in Genshin Impact is to have all the Archons on her roster. Ask Kath what Genshin Impact is and prepare yourself for a very lengthy and detailed conversation about the open-world RPG. Aside from gaming, Kath also likes to dabble in playing music and some creative writing. With all of these hobbies and interests, it's a surprise Kath still gets bored from time to time.
