God of War: Ragnarok – Ending Explained, What you probably missed

Are you still reeling from the last moments in God of War that led to Ragnarok? We know it’s probably a lot to process, so we’re here to review everything about the ending. In this guide, we’ll walk you through what Kratos’ new path meant and what happens to the Nine – well, eight – Realms now that Asgard has fallen. Stay with us!

What happens at the end of God of War: Ragnarok?

After Kratos and his team round up an army from the other Realms, they charge into Asgard with all the might and force they have. However, their efforts proved futile as the Einherjar and Odin’s War Machines overpower everyone in battle. When Kratos realizes this, he comes up with a new plan to try and destroy the War Machines first to prevent them from destroying the realm gates.

Along the way, they come across familiar faces. Some of these faces are not entirely welcoming to their invasion of Asgard. Sindri helps destroy the War Machines that have been relentlessly destroying the realm gates, but it is revealed that he is the only Dwarf there.

  • Sindri does not want any more Dwarves to die because of Odin’s selfishness. This seemingly alludes to Brok’s death which played a considerable part in Ragnarok happening

Thankfully, they manage to shut the War Machines down and make their way into Asgard. Kratos and Atreus also form an unlikely team with Thrud and Sif as they realize that they have one common enemy: Odin.

  • Despite this team-up, Thor is still wary of both Kratos and Atreus. Because of his doubts, the God of Thunder is on a mission to take Kratos down. The two get into a long-winded fight until Kratos proves himself more powerful than Thor

  • However, Kratos spares Thor and lets his fatherly instincts take over when he proposes that they change for their children

Odin’s betrayal

When Thor processes Kratos’ words, the two seemingly appear to have a truce. Odin appears in the mix and wonders why they are no longer fighting. In a rage, he reveals his true nature as he tells Thor repeatedly that he will kill whoever Odin tells him to kill.

  • We see Thor realize how much Odin has used him for personal gain. Instead of killing Kratos as his father wants, Thor does not follow his command
  • Now that Odin has realized his son is not obeying his commands anymore, he does precisely what Sif told Thrud earlier: sacrifice anyone who becomes a problem for him – even if they’re family

Asgard has fallen

Following Thor’s death, Kratos gets into it with Odin. During their battle, Kratos is aided by both Freya and Atreus as they work together to take down the All-Father. They eventually defeat him through their combined efforts, and Atreus takes the opportunity while Odin is weakened to confront him.

  • For a while, we are led to believe that Odin might change his ways when he realizes how powerless he’s gotten. However, Odin refuses to change for the better, which prompts Atreus to capture his soul in one of the Giant Marbles

  • Kratos hands the marble to Freya. As a way of redeeming himself after Baldur’s death, he leaves the fate of Odin in her hands. Throughout God of War: Ragnarok, Freya’s only goal is to kill Odin. But at this moment, she decides against it and gives the marble back to Atreus

  • Knowing Atreus, he might have spared Odin and stashed the marble away. So imagine everyone’s surprise when Sindri appears out of the blue and steals the marble away from Atreus. In a fit of rage and grief, Sindri destroys Odin’s marble with his hammer and disappears

Back at Midgard

We’ve reached the ending of God of War: Ragnarok, but there are still a few loose ends to tie up. After Asgard’s destruction following Ragnarok, Atreus wakes up in Midgard with Valkyries watching over him. Having recovered from the shock and exhaustion that came with them being transported back to Midgard, Atreus sets outs to search for his father.

  • Along the way, Atreus is greeted by friendly and familiar faces. These include Sif and Thrud, Mimir, and even Skjoldr, who was rescued along with other Midgardians before Ragnarok destroyed Asgard

  • When Atreus finds Angrboda, she leads him to where Kratos is. It appears that there is something she wants to show both of them. True enough, Angrboda brings Kratos and Atreus to a hidden Shrine in the mountains

The truth about Faye

When Kratos and Atreus look at the hidden Shrine discovered by Angrboda, they learn a lot about the past and future. Atreus realizes that it was Faye who destroyed his Shrine in Jotunheim.

  • Remember Kratos’ dreams throughout God of War: Ragnarok, where Faye was present? She constantly talked about him following a path of his own and not being too dependent on prophecies
  • Faye destroyed the Shrine in Jotunheim so Kratos and Atreus could follow their own paths. Fueled by the revelation and their victory in Ragnarok, Atreus turns to Kratos and expresses his desire to set out on his own journey

  • Kratos agrees and wholeheartedly tells Atreus that he is ready to take a big step. Before Atreus leaves, they share a quick yet meaningful embrace

A new path for Kratos

After Atreus leaves, Kratos takes the time to look over the hidden Shrine. At the back of the Shrine they first saw, Kratos sees another Shrine painted by Faye. He is overcome with emotions for the second time when he realizes what it depicts: Kratos being celebrated by the people.

  • The second hidden Shrine shows Kratos arriving in the Nine Realms after taking down Olympus. It also depicts Kratos spreading Faye’s ashes from the highest peak in Jotunheim but what captures his attention is at the end of the Shrine

  • In the painting, we see people celebrating and admiring Kratos. Previously, Odin poked at Kratos’ violent past. The All-Father even went as far as telling Kratos that he will never be the type of god people worship and pray to

  • Kratos realizes there is a chance for him to redeem himself as the God of War. Together with Freya and Mimir, he sets out on a journey to rid the Nine Realms of the dangers still lurking about

Is there a secret ending?

One might think our journey in God of War: Ragnarok ends there. But after the first set of credits appears on-screen, players have the freedom to roam the Nine Realms “Beyond Ragnarok.” Kratos can work with Freya to clean up the mess left by Asgard’s destruction and tie up a few loose ends.
