HBO’s House of the Dragons: What We Know So Far

We’re about to see Westeros again in the incoming Game of Thrones (GOT) prequel, House of the Dragons. As the never-ending quest goes on for the most desirable power of the Iron Throne. With the title alone, the prequel certainly focuses on the House Targaryen.

The story goes 200 years before the events between the Starks and Lannisters in GOT. As it is also based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood 2018. Moreover, its official trailer recently just dropped and we now saw a glimpse of what’s about to happen.

What is the story of House of the Dragons?

House of the Dragons features the history, family affairs, and of course the dragons of the House Targaryen. During the reign of King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), the succession for the Iron Throne intensifies in determining the rightful heir. Whether it is his daughter or his brother.

The competition for the throne goes on between Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock/Emma D’Arcy) and Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). In the original order of law, the firstborn child should be the next in line to the throne. However, no queen has ever ruled the seven realms of Westeros.

With the history of no woman having ever sat on the Iron Throne, Prince Daemon strengthens his claim to be the next heir instead. But Rhaenyra is determined in claiming what is hers from birth and that a queen can rule on the Iron Throne. As Rhaenyra says in the trailer, “When I am queen, I will create a new order.”

The conflict in the story would revolve around the Targrayens against each other all for the Iron Throne. Unlike in GOT where several family houses fought to rule on the throne. So we are yet to see how the story is going to unfold for the Targaryen dynasty.

More information about the show

There are 10 episodes of House of the Dragons and Martin is also one of its writers. Contrary to GOT which had 3 dragons, in this show, there are a total of 17 dragons. It was revealed by co-creator Ryan Condal at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).

Therefore we are about to see a lot of dragon-riding from the Targaryens in the show. Moreover, we are not going to have a cameo from Martin anytime soon. As he confirmed it in the SDCC as well.

Lastly, GOT’s Ramin Djawadi is returning to compose another iconic score for House of the Dragons.

House of the Dragons is coming on August 21 at HBO Max

The wait is coming to an end in less than a month away. As we are bound to meet more of the House Targaryen in history.
