Guide to defeating the Lord of Pain, Duriel in Diablo 4
How to summon boss Duriel
The boss Duriel is unavailable at the beginning of the game and you can access it only when you are playing at World Tier IV. You need specific items to summon him that can be obtained only after defeating certain bosses in the Sanctuary.
Go to the Malignant Burrow dungeon near the Tree of Whispers in Hawezar and defeat the Echo of Varshan. Varshan can be summoned by using the body parts you get by completing Tree of Whisper quests. Defeating Varshan will grant you the Mucus-Slick Egg.
Head to the Hall of Penitent Dungeon in the Dry Steppes region and locate the boss Grigoire. Carry enough Living Steel with yourself so that you can use them to summon Grigoire. You will obtain the Shard of Agony once you defeat the boss.
Make sure that you have equipped yourself with the best gear that provides excellent resistance against poison since Duriel’s attacks will be based on poison damage mainly.
How to prepare yourself for the battle against Duriel
Duriel can perform several powerful attacks that include the following:
- Duriel does a frontal claw attack followed by a ground stab and also shoots poison projectiles at you.
- He will do a charged attack once he bends backward. You can evade it using your mobility skills.
- Sometimes he can go underground and emerge from a different hole bringing maggots with himself.
Duriel will make slash and charge attacks and create poison pools in the arena. These attacks can be dodged using your mobility skills. Play in a team and coordinate your strategies to increase your overall effectiveness.
Focus on eliminating the maggots whenever they are summoned by Duriel to avoid getting surrounded by the poison pools created by them. Make sure that you have healing potions and skills that boost poison damage equipped during the battle.
Understand the animation Duriel makes before its charged attack so that you can dodge it easily using sidestep. Moreover, try predicting the places from where the boss can emerge to avoid getting involved in the impact damage.
If you are confident enough about your build then you can consider summoning the Tormented version of Duriel. You can summon Tormented Duriel using six of both Mucus-Slick Egg and Shard of Agony along with 2 Stygian Stones. The boss mechanics are the same only with increased difficulty and better rewards.
