Nintendo’s Smash Bros. had quite the competition last year after Warner Bros. released their platform fighting game, MultiVersus. It became an instant hit in the summer of 2022 and reached 153,000 active users during its peak. It made such a strong debut that it was already being compared to the beloved Smash Bros. However, almost 8 months after its release, MultiVersus
MultiVersus player count drops below 1,000 as of today
The game was released back on July 19, 2022. On the first day of its release, it immediately gathered a total of 143,000 players which even blew up to 153,433 on the next day. With a lot of updates and Warner Bros. characters from DC, Cartoon Network, Rick and Morty, and many more, fans of each franchise jumped on the bandwagon. A month later, Warner Bros. Games reported that there have been over 20 million downloads on Steam. This was mainly due to the appearance of Rick and Morty in the universe, creating a huge fanbase for the game itself.
7 months ago, it reached its peak amount of users. However, today, the active player count drastically dropped to less than a thousand. As of this writing, according to SteamDB, MultiVersus now has only 530 in-game players. That is a 99.65% drop from launch day. Although, it sometimes reaches about 1,000 players during peak time on a daily basis.

Will MultiVersus go down? What caused the player count to drop?
Probably the biggest reason for the game’s downfall is the lack of updates. Season 1 gave a very promising chapter by releasing five (5) characters such as Rick Sanchez, Morty Smith, Gizmo, Stripe, and Black Adam. But, Season 2 wasn’t as great as its predecessor. The second season only added Marvin the Martian last November 2022. And, that is it. Marvin was MultiVersus’ last biggest update up to this day. It’s not new for players to demand new content every time, especially since this is a free-to-play game. Needless to say, MultiVersus failed to capitalize on that area.
Another cause of this conundrum is the game’s monetization issue. Although MultiVersus is a free-to-play game, the developers made it pay-to-win by locking character skins and items. The biggest question is – Will Warner Bros. take down the MultiVersus servers? Well, due to its current situation, that would be a likely choice. However, Player First Games are still pushing for a third season which means they still have high hopes for the project. Plus, a player drop is common to every f2p game, and MultiVersus will not be the first to experience such a massive drop in active player count.
