Squid Game: The Challenge reports an on-set injury
Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge is already under controversy after alleged reports of on-set injuries. The accidents occurred during the recreation of the famous Red Light, Green Light game. It was the first game in the K-drama when the contestants discover the cost behind the Challenge.
- Similar to the original game, the contestants of the live-action Challenge had to make it across the finish line. Making sure to avoid the sharp eyes of the giant robotic doll. If she turns around and spots players moving, then the players are out. However, losing was a matter of life and death in K-drama.
- In the real version, the players, of course, don’t die, but according to reports, Britain’s ongoing cold snap proved to be too much. Therefore, only 228 made it through the first round. Some reporters claimed on-set injury after the first day of the shoot. These weren’t taken lightly by the media, considering the violent K-drama it is based on.
Contestants’ Response After Day One of the Shooting
People weren’t expecting the level of competition on day one and as it turns out, it is similar to the original K-drama. According to various statements from participants, It was like a war zone and people ended up crying.
- Another talking about the British cold said people were willing to stay for as long as possible and at the cost of hypothermia. This spirit of competition was because a lot of money was on the line. The atmosphere raged with the determination that matches the original all too well.

- Further reports said people were yelling for the help of medics. Participants couldn’t even say anything for talking counted as disqualification. Some people couldn’t move their feet because it was too cold and participants allegedly had to stand for 30 minutes between takes. After the shoot people were crawling and one was carried out on a stretcher.
- Hundreds of contenders face elimination on the first day of shooting itself. The participants arrived thinking they were going to be millionaires but they left in tears. Which on the whole replicates the desperation of people for money in the economy portrayed in K-drama Squid Game. However, Netflix fired back against the accusations, calling the claims untrue.

Netflix’s response
A spokesperson of the streaming site released a statement through Postmedia stating they care about the health and safety of the participants and crew alike. They accept the temperature was very cold on set, however, participants were prepared for that. Therefore, any claims of serious injury are untrue.
- According to Variety, fewer than five participants required medics on the set, with one player injuring their shoulder after accidentally running into a wall. Additionally, some participants complained to medics about mild ailments.
- Therefore, although it is factual that contestants suffered on-set injuries during the first shoot of Netflix’s live-action Squid Game: The Challenge, all of them were acute.

Similar to the Korean survival series, the upcoming Netflix reality show finds 456 contestants from across the globe and makes them compete in challenges to take home 4.65 million dollars.
- The original show Squid Game became one of Netflix’s most-watched shows ever in 2021. It told the story of a divorced father played by Lee Jung-jae taking part in a contest alongside 456 desperate people. The players went against morals and bid their life to win the prize money. The series features schoolyard games however losing equals death.
- In announcing the spinoff last summer, Netflix promised players that the worst fate is going home empty-handed. “For this round, the Front Man is in search of English-language speakers from any part of the world,” the release said.

Netflix’s live-action Squid Game survival show only brings the game element of the original K-drama. However, it is hard to not recall the dark realities of the economy and the class morals from the K-drama as we see it play out in reality.
