Both Project Mugen and Zenless Zone Zero are upcoming anime-styled Free-to-Play titles, and you must be wondering which is the better game. We will explore the answer to this question with reasons further down the article. Make sure to read through all of it to learn the bells and whistles about both of these anticipated releases.
All about Project Mugen and Zenless Zone Zero
What is Project Mugen?
Project Mugen is a newly revealed open-world RPG title from Chinese developer NetEase Games. It will directly rival the likes of Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy.
From the teaser, the game reminds us of the GTA series through its urban environmental design. On top of that, the traversal mechanics are reminiscent of the Spider-Man titles by Insomniac Games as well.
- You will be filling the shoes of characters called Espers with incredible powers and investigating various supernatural occurrences in the city to deal with the anomalies that are responsible for them.
- You can also look forward to large-scale boss fights from this free-to-play title. Though no multiplayer/co-op announcement has been made yet, we expect this feature to be present in the game.
- As for combat, you can take on your enemies using melee and ranged weapons.
What is Zenless Zone Zero?
Zenless Zone Zero is an action RPG combining roguelike elements with a fast-paced, smooth combat system. The players of this game will be able to collect multiple characters and synergize them by forming a party.
The plot of the game is set in a post-apocalyptic but technologically advanced urban world. According to the story, this urban metropolis of New Eridu is the last remaining habitable place on the planet.
- You will take on the role of guides known as Proxy to fight anomalies and hostile creatures within a dimension known as the Hollows. The story will unfold as you progress by completing each mission.
- One limitation of the Zenless Zone Zero is that it is not going to be an open-world title. It will follow a linear path with dungeon-like areas for each mission.
Reasons to Play Project Mugen
- Project Mugen is going to feature a larger overall scale, given that it is an open-world title. As it will compete with Genshin, we can count on it to have a captivating story with compelling world-building aspects.
- You should be able to squeeze out a good amount of hours from playing both the main and the side quests. If you are a gamer who likes to dive deep into one game and dedicate all their attention to it, this one might be your ideal choice.
- The game is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, unlike ZZZ which is only releasing for PC and mobile. As a result, you will have the option to play on these additional platforms.
- The core gameplay elements will also be quite different from Zenless Zone Zero. Here, you will be free to roam through the streets while carrying out any activity you like. In short, you will be able to take advantage of all the benefits of an open world map.
- Zenless Zone Zero should follow an energy-based system like the other games identical to it. When it is drained, you would either have to wait for it to fill up or you would have the option to fill it up by watching ads, using consumables, or paying money.
- We don’t think that Project Mugen is going to restrict your playtime with such a mechanic.
Reasons to Play Zenless Zone Zero
- Zenless Zone Zero is going to cater to a more casual player base. It does have a story, but it is only there to cover up this necessary aspect of the game. As a result, you should be able to jump in or out of the game without getting too engrossed.
- From the new trailer, we have seen that it features multiple playable mini-games within it as well. This is a unique aspect of this title that might attract some audience.
- If you love the rogue-like mechanics or the dungeon crawlers, this game should be on your list.
- Looking at a glance, Zenless Zone Zero is going to take up less storage space while being a less resource-hungry game at the same time. Therefore, a mid-range phone or low-spec PC might be capable enough to run this game efficiently compared to Project Mugen.
Conclusion
Zenless Zone Zero and Project Mugen share multiple traits like anime aesthetics, urban settings, fluid combat, party-based switch-in/switch-out systems, etc. From what we’ve seen, Project Mugen will be a better game than Zenless Zone Zero while looking at all the aspects.
We would also recommend trying both of them for yourself when they come out, as both of them are free-to-play titles. Which of these two are you looking forward to playing? Let us know in the comments below.
