Sony PlayStation 5 is a very well-received and unique-looking gaming console launched in November 2020. While PlayStation has always been a go-to gaming device for most gamers, PS5 is proving a little difficult to get your hands on. There have been some stock availability issues with PS5 since its inception. But it’s so good and supports so many games that fans are ready to wait for it. Anyways, we have some news about a new model of PS5 which you really need to know before you make a purchase.
The Issue
Days ago, Press Start, an Australian gaming outlet reported that newer PS5 consoles were shipped to the country last week. These consoles were a bit different from the original models as they were lighter in weight and were easier to assemble. The base stand in these new models had a screw system that could be assembled by hands, removing the need for a screwdriver.
It was obvious that this new screw system couldn’t make it 300 grams lighter, but we didn’t know the exact factor. Well, it seems like today we have an answer for you guys. It is the heatsink, which has caused the new PS5 models to be lighter. This is not good news as a lighter heatsink poses a big issue and makes the new models run much hotter.
Youtuber Austin Evans showcased the difference between the two models and noted how poor the heating system was now. “Oh My God! I have like half the heat sink!”, he exclaimed while comparing the two versions. The heat sink wasn’t the only issue as its new cooling fan is also a bit problematic. Let’s talk about them in detail below.
New Heatsink and Cooling Fan
- As mentioned above, new models feature a dialed-down heating system, thanks to the new heatsink and cooling fan. The new models have a significantly smaller heatsink as compared to the older model. As you can see from the image above, it is visibly much smaller and features fewer copper and aluminum heat fins.
- The new cooling fan manufactured by Delta Electronics has 17 wing blades instead of 23 wing blades in the original Delta fans. Also, the wing blades on the new Delta fan protrude longer into the center than the original. Now we can’t really comment on whether this makes it better or worse, but it sure seems like the latter.
- Apart from this, a new Wi-Fi receiver component is also visible in the newer models, but we do not have much information about that yet. Anyways, getting back to the point, the new models run on a hotter temperature and have a poor cooling system. So, you may want to take this into consideration before making your purchase, especially if you plan on installing additional NVMe SSDs.
