The sixth spinoff in the series, Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon, was first revealed by Yacht Club in February 2020 as a “roguelite puzzle game hybrid”. Among the many announcements made in Nintendo’s August 2021 Indie World Showcase, it was confirmed that Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon will be featured in Nintendo Switch, with the Amiibo support.
- Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon is an action-packed puzzle game. It is based in the same universe as Shovel Knight that came out in 2014. It is a falling block puzzle game that also features dungeon crawling elements.
- There are different game modes; the story mode, the daily challenges, the two-player competitive Versus mode, and much more. Players can play as more than ten different characters. Each unique hero has their own powers and play styles within the Shovel Knight universe.
Gameplay
Shovel Knight needs to match groups of enemies that fall into place, as in a standard puzzle challenge. However, he is also a part of the board himself. Grouping enemies together delivers massive chain attacks.
Players can also use keys, power-ups, and potions to refill health. As Shovel Knight moves, the board changes, and as rooms are cleared by matching enemies, it leads to new areas. In Shovel Knight Amiibo, players can make use of the NFC figures to “call upon a familiar fairy friend to keep you company”.
In Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove the Amiibo would summon Madam Meeber. It is yet to be seen who will be called upon in Pocket Dungeon. The Nintendo website also talks of a new story complemented by a new visual style, with more of Shovel Knight’s “signature storytelling and humor.”
