Sony PlayStation 5: Variable Refresh Rate Support – All Details

Sony announced Monday that it will begin pushing out support for the PS5’s Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) functionality via an update coming out this week.

VRR will also be applied to titles that don’t support it, according to Sony. However, Nishino emphasized that performance would vary based on the TV you’re using, the game you’re playing, and the visual option you choose for a game that supports various modes if it does.

WHAT IS VRR?

  • Variable refresh rate or VRR enables a compatible display to only update when the console or GPU delivers a new frame.
    • This ensures that the display refresh rate is perfectly synced with the display output, preventing screen tearing without the need to enable v-sync and reducing frame time irregularities when the console can’t keep up with the display’s fixed refresh rate.
    • As a result, the gameplay experience is more fluid, consistent, and responsive.

VRR is accessible via a setting in the Screen and Video settings on the PlayStation 5. It can be limited to only supported games or made to function on all games by an additional setting.

A game update will add VRR functionality to more games. Future games will certainly contain the feature at launch.

Unfortunately, HDMI 2.1-compatible televisions and monitors are the only ones that can use the feature. While VRR capability was added to the HDMI spec with version 2.1, it is now available on HDMI 2.0 products as well.
