“30 FPS in 2022.” “Next-gen has surely arrived.” And numerous other discussions are brewing after the news broke. Gotham Knights will run at 30 FPS on consoles, the developers confirmed yesterday, and here’s why.
On their Discord server, one of the staff members released the following information –
I know many of you are wondering about the availability of a performance mode for Gotham Knights on consoles. Due to the types of features we have in our game, like providing a fully untethered co-op experience in our highly detailed open-world, it’s not as straightforward as lowering the resolution and getting a higher FPS. For this reason, our game does not have a performance/quality toggle option and will run at 30FPS on consoles.
Check out what Lee Devonald, Character Technical Artist at Rocksteady, said about the entire issue below the following section.
Why are fans upset?
Most of us who heard the news were upset with WB’s decision. They broke the news to its Discord members and there wasn’t any official press release. Moreover, the news came just one week prior to the game’s launch.
People pre-ordered the game for $69.99 and to find out such a piece of crucial information just one week prior isn’t fair to the players.

Why Gotham Knights is capped at 30FPS on consoles?
According to Lee Devonald, a game dev veteran, the current-gen consoles (PS5/Xbox Series X) aren’t “much better” than the last-gen consoles (PS4/Xbox One).
Just a reminder, Lee Devonald didn’t work on Gotham Knights, nor does he work for WB Games Montreal.
He went on to explain that 60FPS equals 16 milliseconds and that “each enemy on screen takes up a chuck of that time.”

He goes on to talk about global illumination and shadows

“Lighting and Illumination *are* gameplay features”

The Gotham Knights dev team has “put quality first”

A longer explanation
A Twitter user countered Lee defending WB Games Montreal
As a game dev you should know that current gen is alot better and more powerful then the last but whatever. And it doesn’t matter what we lose out on we want 60fps as an option, you out here defending what you dont know about you have no idea why they didn’t add it.

“Stop damage controlling and giving free passes to these developers”
I wish dudes like you would stop damage controlling and giving free passes to these developers. When last gen games are being remade to 60 it’s unacceptable when new games are not.
What are you talking about? Current GEN consoles are head and shoulders better than the last ones.— LordSoth (@LordSothk0tlrip) October 15, 2022
“Last minute before launch”
Honestly you can’t defend this what’s worse is that they told us this the last minute before launch next week. It’s the next gen most games have the options to your choosing.

60FPS should be the bare minimum in 2022
Sad to see that in 2022 a rock solid 60FPS still isnt the bare minimum requirement for a console game.
The rest of the game should be designed around that goal, not treat it like everything else is more important than a fluid and responsive experience.— Battle(non)sense (@BattleNonSense) October 15, 2022
ResetEra users tend to have better and more constructive conversations. A user writes –
“The min requirement on PC is a 1660ti, which they say will run the game at 1080p60 on low settings. The GPUs in the consoles are a lot better. Stands to reason they should be able to at least match that.
At least add an uncapped VRR option. Kind of unfortunate.”
Another user writes –
“The fact that they were avoiding the question and now had to put out a statement like this.
I guarantee you, that if a performance mode was low on the list of priority features for this game, it just shot straight to the top.
People voicing their disappointment with this and canceling their preorders just made this a top priority for the devs.
I look forward to them explaining how it suddenly became “possible” after they just told us it was not.”
Gotham Knights PC System Requirements
The minimum system requirements are –
-
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit
- Processor: Intel Core i5-9600K (3.7 GHz) OR AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (3.60 GHz)
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti OR AMD Radeon RX 590
- DirectX: Version 12
- Storage: 45 GB available space
- Additional Notes: 1080p / 60fps / Low Quality Settings
This explains a lot.
The MINIMUM required CPU for Gotham Knights on PC is a Ryzen 3600 which is from the same generation as the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
And that's for 1080p lowest settings 💀 pic.twitter.com/vSYu09se3b

“To push Ray Tracing on console”
Another RestEra user writes –
““Not as simple as lowering resolution for higher framerates”
Watch people with the PC version show this to be utter PR nonsense in order to push Ray Tracing on console. Hopefully like one of the only other console games to target 30fps with RT (Watch Dogs Legion) there will be a performance mode patched in later.
They should just be real and say “a performance mode requires more time to optimize so it will take longer”. Most sane people wouldn’t have an issue with that.”
