Squid Game Season 2 Storyline and What To Expect

Squid Game Season 1 took the online streaming platform by storm when it was released in September 2021. With the pandemic still raging, online streaming platforms witnessed increased traffic during the last two years. Many movies were released on OTT platforms. This had already brought in a wider audience for online streaming platforms. In such a scenario, Squid Game was received very well across the globe. In November, it became the most streamed series on Netflix in November 2021.

The Concept

Squid Game did not employ a new concept. In fact, the survival horror genre already had many such movies in the stash. Battle Royale, Alice in Borderland, The Belko Experiment are just a few of the films that occupy the higher echelons in this genre. So, what exactly did Squid Game get right to have become a worldwide sensation?

Well, maybe it was the cast, maybe it was the acting. Or maybe it was the fact that the same survival horror concept reflected the economic situation in Korea. Maybe it was the mix of elitism and philanthropy presented in The Host and his guests. Or maybe it was the people, who were willing to get back into the gore and blood, along with the friendships and betrayals along the way. The games themselves have to be definitely mentioned as one of the most interesting aspects of the show. Each game was intriguing and made us anticipate what was next in store.

Whatever it may have been, people seemed to love it. Squid Game references are not sparse. They have appeared as mods and references in Fortnite, Among Us, Genshin Impact, and CS: GO, among others. Moreover, the game was also recreated a couple of times in real life.

Moreover, there is also a rip-off game on Steam, Crab Game, where players compete online in a series of games till only one of them is left standing.

Season 2

With such a humongous response across the globe, there is bound to be another line of intriguing episodes coming sometime in the future. Squid Game writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has teased two more seasons. In an interview with the KBS, he stated that he was in talks with Netflix for seasons 2 and 3. He also acknowledged the tremendously positive feedback received, saying that everyone “is working hard to prepare for the next season with a positive outlook.” Netflix has also confirmed the same, saying that nothing is confirmed as yet, but a decision would be made soon.

Dong-hyuk did not reveal too much about season 2, but he stated that he had a basic storyline set out in his mind and that the brainstorming stage had begun. He confirmed that season 2 would start off where season 1 ended, with Seong Gi-hun’s investigation of the people behind the Squid Game tournament. At the end of season 1, Gi-hun abandons his flight to the US to uncover the secrets behind the Squid Game. The Host of the 33rd Squid Game passes away at the end, and he is the only one whose identity we, and Gi-hun, come to know of. Who else is behind this ghastly tournament? Who is the architect? What do the other guests gain from the tournament, apart from the twisted pleasure from watching people compete and die?

What To Expect

There are several questions that need to be answered and fans will well be expecting them in the next season. One of the first questions that come to mind is about the Front Man, who is apparently the brother of Hwang Jun-ho, the police officer who manages to infiltrate the ongoing Squid Game.

In addition to this, Jun-ho also collects and records data about the Squid game tournament. He attempts to transmit the data to his commanding officer when he is confronted by guards and the Front Man. Did Jun-ho succeed in exposing the tournament? Moreover, we are yet to see if Jun-ho actually did die after he was shot by the Front Man and fell off a cliff.

Finally, we have already been taken through what happens in a Squid game tournament, and it was what made season 1 so interesting. So, we are all obviously expecting something new in season 2 of Squid Game. Obviously, Gi-hun’s journey will take the center stage, but what else is in wait? Will we see Kang Sae-byeok’s brother play a role? Will we see Jun-ho come back to work with Gi-hun?

Even if Squid Game is exposed, can it really be exposed? Especially with the sheer amount of power and money that it is so obviously backed by? We will have to wait to find out. We cannot expect season 2 to come as quickly as in 2022.
