Until Dawn Movie Should Have PG Rating, Here’s Why

Why Until Daw Movie Should Be RG Rated

Sony Pictures has announced their plans to make a Until Dawn movie by adapting an almost decade-old horror game for the screens.

The massive following of the interactive game is a plus for the adaption but there are more than a few challenges that the creators must overcome first including its rating issue.

Until Dawn movie can be favored with a PG rating

It isn’t surprising that Sony Pictures is up for investing in a video game-based movie after the immense success of The Last Of Us but their choice is a debatable one.

Until Dawn is one of the best interactive horror video games featuring stars like Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere, which attaches a considerable reputation to its name.

An average film can not satisfy or attract the game’s audience to the cinema. The game is also in itself an interactive movie that is supported by the launch of an entire game series.

Therefore, Sony requires its stars to align for the success of this film. The starting point could be capitalizing on the market instead of boxing the film to a targeted audience with an adult rating.

The game was launched on PlayStation in 2015 with an R-rating for most countries but that hasn’t refrained teenagers from playing the game.

As per the IMDb parental guide, the video game has mild to moderate nudity, profanity, and reference to substances, while it has severe ratings for violence, gore, and frightening elements.

If the creators focus on the game’s characters, plot, and other elements instead of making it a typical gore with jump scares then they can expand their audience with at least a PG-16 certificate.

Many countries take the R-rated or PG-18 certificate seriously by forbidding anyone under the age limit to watch the film regardless of them being accompanied by an adult.

The film’s creators David Sandberg’s films Lights Out and Shazam! were both PG-13, while the creator of Conjuring Universe Gary Dauberman films are also generally PG-15 – PG-16 rated.

That’s why a milder rating will be favorable and also provide creators a chance to develop the movie as an important addition to the game series rather than becoming a forgettable adaption.

Other challenges for Until Dawn movie adaption

Apart from the rating the film faces a major challenge in creating a a unique plot that doesn’t stray away from its source.

Until Dawn game emphasizes on butterfly effect by assigning importance to players’ decisions and interactions with the environment. This is difficult to adapt to the screens.

One of the netizens has suggested converting the game into a classic whodunit movie. This will help add a butterfly effect to the character’s choices that leads them to their fate.

It will also keep the audience at the edge of their seats guessing what would happen next and to whom.

Last but not the least is film’s casting- Until Dawn‘s gameplay unfurled in 3rd person’s point of view placing great emphasis on its cast to lead the story.

Many notable actors including Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, Meaghan Martin, Brett Dalton, Jordan Fisher, Nichole Bloom, and Peter Stormare, provided motion and voice for them.

This makes them reprising their roles understandable but if they do so then the movie will require changes in the plot to make it unique.

On the other hand, if the casting is changed then it poses a threat of disappointing the game’s faithful audiences who are accustomed to the game’s actors.

Therefore, the creators of Until Dawn are bound to face many challenges while developing it for the screens but that also grows curiosity and anticipation about its movie.

  1. Oh, i wonder if the Until Dawn movie will have multiple endings like the game. It would be nice if it had an ending for only male/females survive.
