The character demo for Shenhe, “Crane in the Wild” dropped this morning, and apart from the beautiful visuals and new character information that Mihoyo is known for, one particularly interesting detail is picking up a lot of traction in the Genshin Impact community. Apparently, the new cryo character launching in version 2.4, Shenhe, is related to one of our existing characters, Chongyun.

Aunt Shenhe??
- Now, Chongyun has not exactly been getting as much screen time in the Genshin lore as many of his fans might have wanted, but that hasn’t stopped these rumors from going wild since the moment the trailer was released.
- Fans of Chongyun have already been clamoring to see more of him present in cutscenes and stories. That may be changing very soon, as the new trailer reveals that Shenhe is none other than… Chongyun’s aunt?
- Yes, as speculated by a few keen observers, it is now confirmed that Shenhe and Chongyun are related, where Shenhe is Chongyun’s “auntie”. The Chinese Genshin community was quick to point out that, specifically, she was referred to as his “mother’s younger sister”. This would make Chongyun Shenhe’s nephew, and that has some potential implications for both characters in the future.
What does this mean for the Genshin Impact lore between these two characters moving forward? Both of them are exorcists, as Chongyun mentions that he recognized some of Shenhe’s techniques after she saved him. For long-standing fans of Chongyun, Shenhe even finished Chongyun’s exorcism quote, the last line of which had been forgotten by Chongyun until this point:
“Heart be pure, evil be erased. Mind be purged, world be saved.”
Whether the two of them will be able to work well together mechanically remains to be seen, but for now, at least Chongyun has some newly discovered family to check on his temperature and make sure he’s eating enough popsicles.
