A submersible craft carrying five people in the area of the Titanic wreck in the North Atlantic has been missing since Sunday. This devastating news got people all around the world wondering how it happened. One of the most debated topics about this news is that the craft, which is known as ‘Titan’ is controlled by a PlayStation 3 controller.

In this article, we are going to dive into the unbelievable yet true question, was the missing Titanic submarine piloted by a PlayStation 3 controller?

What is the Titan submarine?

The Titan is a research and survey submersible that has room for five passengers. Usually, the crew has a pilot and four “mission specialists”. They could be marine scientists, archaeologists, or any other person who can afford the experience as a tourist.

A company called OceanGate is responsible for The Titan. Since its beginnings in 2009, OceanGate, a privately held business with its headquarters in Everett, Washington, has concentrated on expanding access to deep-ocean exploration.

The Titan is a 6.7-meter (22ft) vehicle, which is made of “titanium and filament wound carbon fiber,”. It weighs 10,432kg (23,000lbs), or around six mid-sized automobiles, and can dive to depths of 4,000 meters (13,120 feet). “With a comfortable safety margin,” according to operator OceanGate.

Now, back to the main question…

Did they use a PlayStation controller for the Titanic submarine?

The short answer is, YES. Unimaginable as it is, it’s true that this submarine, which usually requires a ton of safety measures, uses a console controller as its main navigation system.

“The vessel is controlled by a reinforced Playstation controller. Though it doesn’t have a GPS system and is guided by text messages sent by a team above water.”-quoted from the DailyMail UK.

We can see in an image that has surfaced on social media, that the Titan was indeed using a modified console controller. From the design, the controller actually resembles one Xbox Logitech controller. But there has been no confirmation about what specific console controller the crashed vessel actually used.

Using a console controller to fully control a working submarine itself already sounds unconvincing. Moreover, a CBS journalist, David Pogue, who traveled aboard the tiny submarine to the Titanic last year added a few pieces of information about the vessel.

“There’s no backup, there’s no escape pod. It’s get to the surface or die”. He said that other than a text message relay service with the sub’s support ship, there is no GPS or other kind of connection with the vessel.

About the missing Titan

They declared OceanGate’s submarine as missing on Monday, 19 June 2023. The vessel submerged on a dive Sunday morning. Suddenly, it went missing with no contacts approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into the vessel’s dive.

U.S. Coast Guards have been deploying search teams. However, there has been no news yet regarding the findings of the Titan.
