ROG Turns 20 With a New OLED Handheld and 171-Inch Virtual Display

Handheld gaming entertainment devices continue to evolve, and ASUS is using a major milestone to showcase what it believes the future can look like. To celebrate 20 years of its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand, ASUS has introduced the ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle.

The special-edition package features upgraded hardware, a new OLED display, and augmented reality technology. While the anniversary-inspired design helps the bundle stand out, its hardware improvements may appeal most to fans of gaming industry innovations.

A new OLED experience

Powering the handheld is AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage. That combination gives the device enough performance for a wide range of titles, from smaller indie releases to demanding AAA games. ASUS has also added support for Auto SR preview technology, which is designed to improve visual quality and deliver smoother performance during gameplay.

Perhaps the most significant change is the display. After years of requests from the gaming community, ASUS has replaced the previous screen with a larger 7.4-inch OLED panel. Thanks to a slimmer top bezel, the company was able to fit the bigger display without significantly changing the device’s overall footprint.

The display offers Full HD resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and FreeSync Premium Pro support for smoother gameplay and less screen tearing. ASUS also increased brightness to 1,400 nits and included VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification for better contrast and more vivid highlights. Whether you’re gaming or watching videos, visuals should appear clearer and more vibrant. Gorilla Glass with DXC coating helps reduce glare from nearby light sources.

Cooler and more precise

Because OLED technology generates heat differently than traditional LCD panels, ASUS developed a custom cooling system for the handheld. According to the company, the new design helps maintain lower panel temperatures, improves touchscreen comfort, and supports battery efficiency during longer sessions.

Controls have also received attention. Instead of traditional thumbsticks, the Ally X20 uses TMR sensor technology. ASUS claims these sticks offer greater precision, smoother movement tracking, and improved durability while eliminating the risk of joystick drift.

Another unusual addition is a transforming D-pad inspired by classic Xbox controllers. It works like a standard four-direction D-pad but can rotate to support eight-direction movement for more precise controls. ASUS also refined the face buttons and added a rubberized rear grip for better comfort during long gaming sessions.

A bigger view anywhere

Alongside the handheld, the bundle also comes with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20, a pair of AR gaming glasses. Equipped with dual Micro-OLED displays, the glasses can create a virtual 171-inch screen. Users can choose between a display that follows head movement or one that remains fixed in place.
