The Lord of the Rings is without doubt one of the best things that have happened to the world of cinema. The LOTR trilogy took the cinema we knew to unprecedented heights and opened a world of possibilities. From direction and writing to performance and editing, it was something that blew everyone’s mind.
The scale of that trilogy seems unmatched even to this date and it was such a technical triumph that everyone’s been trying to replicate that. Unfortunately, the prequel trilogy wasn’t as mind-blowing and that is precisely why many fans are skeptical about the upcoming series. Many of you might be following every development in the upcoming series and some of you might not be aware about it. So, what exactly is it?
Production and Release Date
Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series is a prequel to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Peter Jackson’s LOTR and Hobbit films take place in the 3rd age of Middle Earth whereas Amazon’s LOTR series will take place in the 2nd age. It is a project which is envisioned to last up to 5 seasons and 2 seasons are already confirmed by Amazon.
The production of The Lord of the Rings season 1 has been wrapped and it is in the post-production stage. As ambitious as this project is, it will take some time to wrap the editing and mixing part. Due to the pandemic, it has taken some hits and that is why it has been delayed. Earlier it was supposed to release in January 2022 but now has been delayed to 2nd September 2022.
Season 2 of the series is already confirmed by Amazon as well. The production for the same will begin sometime in June or July this year. So, we’ll be travelling to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien a lot in the coming few years.
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings Characters
Since it’s not set in the same age, we will not see the same characters, but we will definitely see a few of them returning. The fan favorite elves, Galadriel and Elrond will be appearing in the series in possibly big roles. Morfydd Clark has been casted as Galadriel who will take Cate Blanchett’s legacy forward and the cast for Elrond hasn’t yet been confirmed. Another character who is sure to make an appearance in the series is going to be the dark lord Sauron.
One ring to rule them, one ring to find them; one ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them. It is quite possible that we see the creation and distribution of the rings in the series as well as the treachery and rise of Sauron. That aside, some of the new characters that we will be seeing are as follows:
- Oren played by Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones) is the main villain of the series.
- Beldor is said to be the show’s protagonist
- Tyra will be played by Markella Kavenagh (My First Summer)
- Trevyn is rumored to be played by Simon Merrell (Knightfall)
- Hennah, May, and Elden are some other new characters we’ll be introduced to in the show
