ARK Survival Evolved: How to Tame a Shadowmane

It’s been ages since Ark: Survival Evolved came out. Currently, a new installment is already in the works, named Ark: Survival Ascended – which is basically for new-gen consoles and higher-grade PCs and utilizes Unreal Engine 5. And Ark Official Servers are about to close down soon as well. But has this stopped the Ark fanbase from leaving the game? Well, it seems the addiction is way too rigid for players to leave just like that. Today, we dive into a very particular dino for this matter – How to tame a Shadowmane in Ark?

With Ark Survival Evolved nearing its end for the official servers, you might still find yourself elated to catch a Shadowmane. To at least, for the life of you, ride on that fiery shadow-like beast. One that jumps as high as a three-storey building. And can drape itself in its transparent coating.

When I played Ark, I was gifted a Shadowmane by a very kind gentleman in Fjordur 1200 official server. Later, he gifted me another one, and ever since I have bred thousands of them. Also, Shadowmane is not necessarily a dino, but more of a big cat. Yet it is referred to as a Dino nonetheless.

Can Shadowmanes be tamed in ARK?

Sure! Taming a Shadowmane in Ark Survival Evolved can be a bit tricky, but with the right strategy, it’s definitely doable.

A few things to be aware of about Manes

  • Shadowmanes are immune to most ranged weapons, so make sure you have a good melee weapon as a backup in case it gets too close. If you have access to a Tek Hover Skiff, you can use it to tranq the Shadowmane from a safe distance.
  • Shadowmanes have a unique ability called “Shadowmane Pounce,” which allows them to leap at targets and pin them down. This can be useful for taking down other creatures, but be careful not to accidentally pounce on your own tames.

Finding a Shadowmane:

Shadowmanes can be found in various locations across the map, but they tend to spawn more frequently in the Lunar biome. They also spawn in Fjordur maps’ Asgard region.

Shadowmanes are part of Genesis: Part 2 and Fjordur Asgard Realm. Look for them during the night, as they are more active then. Keep in mind that Shadowmanes are fast and can teleport, so you’ll need to be quick if you want to catch one. Please wear your Ghillie Armor all around, to ensure your visibility to the manes is zero.

Preparations before Taming a Shadowmane in Ark Survival Evolved

Preparation: Before attempting to tame a Shadowmane, you’ll need to make sure you have the necessary equipment and resources.

  • You’ll need a good weapon (such as a shotgun or high-level crossbow) for protection in case it attacks you. A lot of Fish in a Fish Basket, and possibly some medical supplies (such as Blood Packs or Medical Brews) in case things go wrong.

Passive taming is required for the Shadowmane, despite their size. Any attempt to knock out and tame them will likely result in the player being killed by these aquatic felines. To passively tame a Shadowmane, players must use fish as their only food option. To do this, they must first create fish baskets and fill them with fish.

How to tame: step-by-step process

  • Step 1: Wear a Full Ghillie Suit Before you start taming a Shadowmane. This will help you remain undetected and avoid aggroing the Shadowmane. As an alternative prepare a Cactus Broth which makes you invisible to wild animals.
  • Step 2: Sneak Up on the Sleeping Shadowmane To tame a Shadowmane, you must sneak up on it while it is sleeping. If not, the odds are against you by a lot. You can do this by crouching while wearing a Ghillie Suit or by consuming Cactus Broth.
  • Step 3: Once the basket is filled, players must place it in the last slot of their hot bar. They can then approach the Shadowmane from behind, feed it some fish, and retreat. The Shadowmane will turn invisible and flee at this point.
    • However, if the player is detected, the taming progress will reset to zero, and they will have to start over. Additionally, the creature may attack the player if it senses them. When you are close enough to the sleeping Shadowmane, feed it a Filled Fish Basket of at least 0.5x in size. The type of fish does not matter and the level of the fish does not matter.
  • Step 4: Repeat the Taming Process After feeding the Shadowmane, slowly crouch away while looking at it. Once it is fully tamed, you can repeat the process to tame more Shadowmanes.

Additional Tips for Taming with Fish Baskets:

  1. Place the basket in water and wait several seconds before it becomes active.
  2. Watch for fish to go near the basket and press E to catch it in the trap.
  3. Larger X-value fish seem to give a higher percentage of taming per feed.
  4. Fish in the basket have a spoil timer. Place the basket on your hotbar and get in the water to refresh the spoil timer.
  5. Fish in the basket can be released and be “tamed.” You can come back later to quickly re-catch the fish again.

Additional Tips for Taming Shadowmanes:

  1. The Shadowmane will do a few little circles when it is about to go to sleep.
  2. Crouch when within 30m of the Shadowmane.
  3. If the Shadowmane aggros you, the taming process will reset to 0.0%, so do not let it aggro you.
  4. As soon as you feed the Shadowmane, turn around and run away a good distance.
  5. The taming process does not wear off unless you get aggro, so be patient.
  6. If there is more than one Shadowmane in the group, it isn’t required, but it sure is easier if you take the time to split the group.
  7. Once tamed, Shadowmanes have eight attacks/abilities that can be used on PlayStation.

By following these tips and guidelines, you should be able to find and tame a Shadowmane in Ark Survival Evolved. Good luck and happy taming!
