For years, there have been a lot of attempts to recreate famous video game titles into movies. While most of them flopped big time, others stood out.
Allow us to introduce you to the best movies that were inspired by some of the most popular video games in history.
List of Movies based on popular Video Game titles:
Detective Pikachu (2019)
Back in 2019, the live-action Pokemon hit the theaters with a bang. After its release, it grossed almost $450 Million at the box office worldwide. Surprisingly, the duo of Justice Smith (as Tim Goodman) and Ryan Reynolds (as detective Pikachu) was very fun to watch.
Reynolds was his usual comic and quirky self, only he portrayed a cute Pikachu. In the movie, Pikachu was an aspiring detective who wanted to help solve a mystery involving his trainer, Harry Goodman. Harry mysteriously went missing without a trace and it’s now up to his son, Tim, and Pikachu to unmask the truth.
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Ken Watanabe, Bill Nighy
IMDB Rating: 6.6/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 68%
Silent Hill (2006)
Silent Hill is based on the game franchise of the same name that was first released in 1999. The movie was released in 2006 but had to go up against some box office hits like 300, Cars, The Prestige, The Pursuit of Happyness and more.
Though the movie bombed and did not receive approval from the critics, Silent Hill is still a good horror flick to watch. We have to admit, the jump scares and terrifying visual effects of Silent Hill still hold up to this day.
Cast: Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, Jodelle Ferland
IMDB rating: 6.5%
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 32%
Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2
After a six-year hiatus from acting, Jim Carrey is back in the spotlight again. The beloved comedian played Dr. Robotnik in a video-game adaptation of the lightning-speed blue devil, Sonic the Hedgehog. Thanks to Sonic, Jim Carrey was able to revive his career with another outstanding performance.
Due to its success at the box office, a sequel will be spawned and is set to be released on the 2nd week of April 2022.
Cast: Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Jim Carrey
IMDB Rating: 6.5/10

Mortal Kombat 2021
The 2021 adaptation of one of the most famous arcade fighting games makes this list but the 1997 version could also cut it too. Unfortunately, the movie was a huge flop, only making $83 Million on a $55 Million budget.
But, if you’re a true Mortal Kombat fan, the actors who played some of the popular characters in the game like Subzero, Kano, and Scorpion actually nailed it. You should definitely add this to your must-watch list.
Cast: Jessica McNamee, Lewis Tan, Josh Lawson
IMDB Rating: 6.1/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 54%
Resident Evil 1 (2002)
We get that there’s a lot of hate in this franchise, but it does not change the fact that Milla Jovovich did pretty great as Alice. It may be true that it’s not the best post-apocalyptic zombie movie, but it’s already up there as a cult classic.
Cast: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Ryan McCluskey, Colin Salmon
IMDB Rating: 6.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 36%
Tomb Raider
If you are wondering who was the better Lara Croft is between Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, we simply don’t have the answer. But, if we put things into detail, Tomb Raider 2018 rebooted the titular character and introduced her from her origins. On the other hand, Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft featured more of her tomb raiding adventures.
Both of these movies are good, and if you’re looking for a good Friday night movie, Tomb Raider is a great choice.

IMDB Rating: 6.3/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 52%
Rampage
For those who do not know, the movie RAMPAGE is actually based on a classic video game called King Kong Rampage. To put it simply, it’s a movie with Dwayne Johnson and three massive beasts in it plus the non-stop action, running, jumping, and fighting. It’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, it’s always going to be entertaining! It’s not a surprise that this movie grossed more than $400 Million.

IMDB Rating: 6.1/10

Uncharted
Well, as the famous saying goes, “save the best for last”, this movie is the last but probably the best on the list.
The Uncharted movie is of course based on the popular action/adventure RPG of the same name. The movie features some A-list actors like Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Just a few months after his success with Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland is back again on the big screen for another huge project.
Uncharted is a great family movie for weekend nights. Additionally, we just can’t get enough of Tom Holland!
