Buying A PS5 Might Get Even Tougher in 2021 As It’s Now Being Used For Crypto Mining

UPDATE: TweakTown has explained that the reports are fake.

“You can tune and overclock the Radeon RX 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards but you’ll find it impossible to bump over 60MH/s mining crypto.”

According to CoinTelegraph

“…the screenshot shared by the alleged developer contained a QR code message indicating that the story was manufactured for entertainment value: “There is no such software,” followed by laughing.”

In November, when Sony released the PS5, the console immediately became the most wanted consumer product throughout the world. Three months later, thousands of people are still on the lookout to secure the console due to stock shortage, low production, and scalping. With the PS5 being adapted for mining recently, the problem of scalping will only increase.

According to the website, Gadget Tendency (via ResetEra), enthusiasts from China were successfully able to mine cryptocurrency using the PS5. Although the console isn’t suitable for mining, they have found a workaround for it.

Following this discovery, many crypto enthusiasts might start buying PS5s and put them to crypto mining. This could mean a further shortage of consoles and common people might face an even harder time trying to secure the PS5.

PS5s are already unavailable across all retailers with drops lasting less than 5-10 minutes. And drop timings are mostly unknown unless you’re following tracker accounts on Twitter. If crypto miners start using PS5s, the console might not be readily available until 2022.

A photo was shared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo showing the successful mining of Ethereum (a type of cryptocurrency). The mining performance of the console reached 98.76 MH/s (MH/s = million hashes per second). The power consumption was 211 W.

Here, take a look –

Compared to that, an RTX 3090 delivers up to 122 MH/s. While an RTX 3080 performs at 86.16 MH/s.

Gadget Tendency says the console was hacked and most probably overclocked since it exceeded its native performance of 50 MH/s.

Not just the PS5, but the person was able to mine Etherum with an M1 chip MacBook Air as well.
