The wait continues for Deadpool 3, and although 2023 started out with exciting developments about the sequel, things have been less hopeful since July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Still, hopes were raised as the actors’ strike neared its conclusion, with negotiations finally underway. Fans immediately prepared for the movie to resume production so it could be ready for the planned 2024 theatrical release.
So, is Deadpool 3 finally set to premiere next year? Director Shawn Levy has finally addressed whether the third film will be completed in time for its previously announced release date or if the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel is set for a later premiere.
Shawn Levy Addresses Deadpool 3 2024 Release Date
Levy recently spoke to TheWrap while promoting his latest project, All the Light That We Cannot See. During the interview, the director pointed out that although Deadpool 3 had a tentative release date, he is still determining whether they will stick to that following the recent strikes.
“I wish I knew. I don’t even know if we officially have [a release date]. I know we were gonna be May 3,” Levy said. “Certainly, the actors’ strike and the long pause in production have put that release date in true risk. We’ve shot half the movie. I’ve edited half the movie. We’re dying to get back to work and get this movie out next year.”

The prospects for Deadpool 3 seemed uncertain in the face of a prior report from the outlet, which offered a glimmer of hope that production might be revving up again. As Hollywood studios gear up to resume numerous paused projects following the expected conclusion of the actors’ strike, Disney has taken a strong stance in reaffirming its commitment to Deadpool 3‘s originally scheduled release date of May 3, 2024, designating it as a “top priority” for the company once the strike reaches a resolution.
Is Deadpool 3 Going To Be Delayed?
Presently, the SAG-AFTRA strike is still navigating the negotiation process. Yet, there’s optimism that an agreement may be reached in the coming weeks. Should all go according to plan, Deadpool 3 is anticipated to swiftly recommence production, with hopes of making its intended May 2024 premiere.
Deadpool 3 will see the return of Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth, alongside Hugh Jackman, reprising his role as Wolverine. Morena Baccarin returns as Vanessa, while Brianna Hildebrand is set to continue playing the mutant Negasonic Teenage Warhead. The third installment will also welcome Jennifer Garner back as Elektra Natchios. The Alias star previously portrayed the comic book heroine in 2003’s Daredevil, featuring Ben Affleck as the titular blind lawyer turned crime fighter. Finally, Taylor Swift is rumored to make an appearance at the Marvel heroine Dazzler, but this has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios.
Production on Deadpool 3 started early this year before coming to a halt due to the ongoing strikes. However, once a deal is struck, it’s expected to get back on track. Deadpool 3 will be the fourth film featuring Reynolds as Wade Wilson (remember that he played the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine?). Notably, this sequel marks the first Marvel Studios production following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox. As it stands, Deadpool 3 is slated for a premiere on May 3, 2024.
