Death Stranding Makes a Surprise Debut on Xbox Series X & S—Kojima Productions Gains Full IP Control

Death Stranding Makes a Surprise Debut on Xbox Series X & S

In a move that has thrilled fans of both Xbox and Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding, the genre-bending game by Kojima Productions, is making its unexpected debut on Xbox Series X and S consoles. Originally launched as a PlayStation exclusive in 2019 and later expanded to PC.

Death Stranding has quickly become a defining title for Kojima, blending elements of open-world exploration with cinematic storytelling. The game’s arrival on Xbox consoles marks a pivotal moment not only for the title but also for Kojima Productions itself, as the studio gains full control over the game’s intellectual property (IP).

A New Chapter for Kojima Productions

With the announcement of Death Stranding coming to Xbox, Kojima Productions also revealed that it has secured complete IP ownership of the game. Previously, Sony held publishing rights, which limited the title’s platform reach. This new arrangement allows Kojima Productions greater freedom in how and where the game is distributed. By gaining IP control, the studio now has the power to expand its audience beyond PlayStation and PC, opening doors to future platform expansions and potential sequels.

Fans have eagerly awaited an Xbox release, especially since Kojima Productions’ partnership with Microsoft to create an entirely new game, tentatively called Project Overdose, was announced. Now, with Death Stranding launching on Xbox, Kojima seems committed to diversifying his creations across major gaming platforms, while also strengthening ties with the Xbox ecosystem.

Enhanced Performance for Xbox Series X|S

Death Stranding’s Xbox Series X|S edition is expected to feature upgraded graphics and optimized performance. Sources close to Kojima Productions indicate that the Xbox version will support 4K resolution on Series X and benefit from smoother frame rates on both Series X and S consoles, making use of each console’s unique hardware capabilities.

This performance boost will further enhance the game’s atmospheric landscapes, detailed world design, and complex character animations. Additionally, Xbox players can look forward to enjoying the Director’s Cut content, which introduces new missions, equipment upgrades, and enhanced combat mechanics, adding even more layers to the already expansive gameplay experience.
