Who is Lilith in Diablo 4?

Making her grand return in Diablo 4, Lilith will be the main antagonist gamers should watch out for. Many refer to her as the Queen of the Succubi, the Daughter of Hatred, and the Mother of Sanctuary. She was also responsible for giving birth to the first Nephalem.

Lilith’s meeting with Inarius and the birth of Sanctuary

  • Lilith grew tired of the eternal conflict between Burning Hells and High Heavens and wanted to create a new world where she could live in peace.
  • After one of the wars, Lilith captured an angel named Inarius. After Inarius woke up, he spoke to Lilith about how he wanted to escape this eternal conflict and create a world away from it.
  • Lilith used her charms and voodoo-ed Inarius to make him obsessed with her. However, this attraction isn’t limited to Inarius. Along the way, Lilith starts seeing Inarius in a more romantic light.
  • She used her charm to steal Worldstone from  Pandemonium Fortress alongside a group of followers (angels and demons that wanted an escape from the eternal conflict). Inarius helped Lilith carry out this plan of hers.
  • Once they successfully retrieved the Worldstone, they used it to create the realm called Sanctuary. This is where Lilith and Inarius would start their life together. Together, they gave birth to the nephalem.

The First Nephalem

  • Lilith and Inarius together gave birth to their first son, Rathma.
  • This was the first-ever child born between a demon and an angel. This created the Nephalem race as other angels and demons started having babies.
  • Inarius feared that the nepahlems were growing stronger and stronger each day. The nephalems posed a threat to both Burning Hells and High Heavens, so the concerned factions and parties decided to invade the Sanctuary and kill the Nephalems.

Lilith’s Lore and Banishment

  • The invasion of Sanctuary and the killing of Nephalems made Lilith lose her calm, and she killed anyone who wanted to eradicate Nephalems.
  • Most of these angels and demons were followers of Inarius, and naturally, he stood against Lilith to stop her rage.
  • Hurt by the betrayal, Lilith slaughtered any being who sided with and supported Inarius. This event in Diablo lore became known as The Purge.
  • Both Lilith and Inarius go against each other, although Inarius came out to be a victor.
  • Inarius’ betrayal of Lilith reached the point that he banished her into the Void. Once Lilith was banished, Inarius regained control of Sanctuary and set his plans to weaken the nephalem in motion.
  • Despite her banishment into the Void, Lilith still had many followers in Sanctuary. With the help of her first son, Rathma, she has returned to exact vengeance against those who wronged her.
