Disney’s actions despite the decision of the Supreme Court

Disney is expected to cover the travel cost of its employees seeking the services of family planning and/or reproductive care which include personal decisions, ergo abortions. Because of the new law, employees who plan on getting an abortion must fly to a state where it is legal. Disney currently has a total of 195,000 employees. In addition to that, they also have a theme park in Florida (Walt Disney World Resort) which employs 80,000 people. This theme park is located in the State of Florida which happens to have a signed bill prohibiting the act of abortions after 15 weeks of gestation period. The bill was signed by Governor Ron DeSantis and will take full effect next month, July 1, 2022.

“We recognize the impact of the ruling and that we remain committed to providing comprehensive access to quality and affordable care for all of our employees, cast members, and their families, including family planning and reproductive care, no matter where they live,” Disney said in a statement.

DeSantis, a Republican, is known to support the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Roe V. Wade case. He also stated previously that any legal challenges to the new law will be opposed accordingly.

Other companies joining Disney in the movement

Aside from Disney, other major companies are also taking part in the movement. Some of them are Meta (the owner of Facebook), CitiGroup, Levi and Strauss Co., Amazon, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Warner Bros., Microsoft, Netflix, and JP Morgan Chase and Co.. All of them have vowed to help their employees financially concerning the related cases stated above.

As a way to help their employees, these corporations are planning to reimburse the travel and service costs while also being extremely supportive of their staff.

In recent events, the United States Supreme Court decided by overruling the Roe V. Wade legal case. In 1973, Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision that created ruckus, and controversy, and changed the landscape of reproductive health bills in the future. Roe v. Wade generally protects a pregnant woman’s freedom to choose to have an abortion in any U.S. state, free from the interference of politics of any sort.

Most Americans are already condemning the resolution of Roe V. Wade. With this now becoming a thing of the past, pregnant women who plan on getting abortions will face legal charges and could get fined plus jail time.
