Nintendo Confirms Back-to-Back Directs for Zelda 40th Anniversary and Upcoming Switch 2 Games

Nintendo is preparing a packed week of announcements with two Direct presentations scheduled on consecutive days. One will celebrate a major anniversary, while the other looks ahead to what Switch 2 owners can play this winter. These broadcasts give fans plenty to watch as the year enters its busy final stretch. They could also put several top upcoming video game releases back at the centre of the gaming conversation.

Zelda goes first

The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct will stream on September 8 at 7am PT, 10am ET, 3pm BST and 4pm CEST. Running for approximately 30 minutes, the presentation will deliver what Nintendo describes as “a variety of information” related to the franchise and its anniversary.

Nintendo has not revealed exactly what will appear, although one project is difficult to ignore. A remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is heading to Switch 2 in 2026 after being announced earlier this year, making it a strong candidate for the presentation.

More gameplay and a firm release date are widely expected, but neither has been promised. Reports have also pointed towards Zelda-themed Switch 2 hardware, while other predictions range from older game ports to news about the live-action movie.

Those possibilities could make the Direct particularly interesting for fans following how classic franchises are being reworked through modern game development. Still, anything beyond Nintendo’s broad description of the presentation should be treated as speculation until the broadcast begins.

Switch 2 follows

Attention shifts to the regular Nintendo Direct exactly 24 hours later on September 9. This presentation starts at the same times and runs for around 45 minutes, bringing the two Directs to approximately 75 minutes altogether.

Unlike the Zelda event, Nintendo has provided a clearer idea of what the second show will cover. Its focus will be Switch 2 games launching this winter, potentially putting some of the top upcoming video game releases on firmer footing before the end of 2026.

Titles already on Nintendo’s wider release schedule include Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Other games, including The Duskbloods, have been suggested as possible appearances, although Nintendo has not confirmed the lineup.

New announcements are also possible as the company begins filling out its plans beyond the current release calendar. That makes the presentation another chance to see what gaming industry innovations and new entertainment experiences developers are preparing for Switch 2.

Gameplay continues

Nintendo will not stop when the September 9 Direct ends. A Nintendo Treehouse: Live presentation will follow, providing roughly 110 minutes of gameplay from selected titles featured during the main broadcast.

Viewers should get a closer look at games that receive shorter trailers during the Direct. Rather than simply adding more announcements, Treehouse can show how some of those projects actually play.

Both Directs will be available through Nintendo’s official online channels. With Zelda taking one day and the broader Switch 2 lineup taking the next, gaming fans are getting a substantial preview of Nintendo’s plans for the months ahead.
