Gears 5 Does Not Smoke

Headshots, mutilations, etc. are not a problem, but smoking/consuming tobacco in Gears 5 is quite another thing. As part of a new collaboration with Truth Initiative, an organization dedicated to eliminating smoking and tobacco use. The Coalition has eliminated everything smoking in Gears 5.

Studio boss Rod Fergusson said to Variety Magazine, “I’ve seen the devastating effects of smoking first-hand, it has always been important to me not to use smoking as a narrative. Which is why we made the conscious decision to stop smoking in Gears 5 and not to emphasize or glorify on this throughout the Gears of War universe.

Does smoking in a game make a difference? Gears 5 is an upcoming third-person shooter video game being developed by The Coalition. This will be published by Xbox Game Studios on 10 September 2019 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One as part of Xbox Play Anywhere.
